뮤즈 킴의 이번 전시는 지난 5월 남산에서 진행된 뮤즈 킴 초대개인전의 앵콜 요청에 의해 ‘뮤즈 킴 앵콜 개인展’으로 진행하게 되었다. 특별히 이번 전시 오프닝에서는 아티스트 뮤즈 킴의 애창곡을 연주할 계획으로, 뮤즈 킴 작가의 숨은 재능을 엿 볼 기회이다.
뮤즈 킴 작가는 평면작업과 설치작업을 병행하여 왔으며, 아트 분야 뿐 아니라 전시기획 및 환경운동, 방송 및 기자활동, 교육사업 등 여러 분야에서 다양한 활동을 겸해 왔다. 문학과 음악, 패션에도 남다른 재능이 있어서 앞으로 뮤즈 킴의 공연 및 작가의 글들을 출판할 예정이다.

때로 매혹적이며 때로 고루한 내 일상은 끊임없는 갈등과 방황을 왕래하게 한다.
상상과 허구는 현실보다 훨씬 더 나다움에 가깝게 느껴져 그곳이 내가 사는 세상인가? 생각해본다. 그만큼 목에 걸린 현실의 이질감이 유토피아를 찾아 나서게 하나보다.

나와의 채팅(chatting with me)시리즈
작가는 코비드19를 겪으며 인간의 고통에 대해 생각하였고, 어릴 적 트라우마(trauma)로 남아있는 뱀의 기억을 소환하여 의미를 부여했다. 예술적 영감으로 드러난 작가의 트라우마는 날 것 같은 거칠고 고통스러운 경험이지만 창작에 새로운 변화를 드러낸다. “나와의 채팅” 작업들에서는 뱀과 눈동자 등의 이미지들이 종종 렌더링 되면서 그로테스크(grotesque)하기도 하다. 이러한 작업들은 그동안 해왔던 거울 작업 “반영의 이면”과 연결된 작업으로, 형상 이면의 숨겨진 ‘본질에 대한 끊임없는 탐구’ 인간의 유한성과 양면성, 존재와 실존에 대한 일관적 사유의 흐름이 있다. 또한 자기 성찰적이며 초인적 삶에 대한 고뇌와 사유가 담겨있다.

작가는 가장 싫어하는 동물인 뱀(snake)을 모티브(motive)로 설정하여 다의적 의미로 작품에 담았다. 그것은 견디기 어려운 시련이고 상상 속에 너무 커지는 생각, 숨겨진 두려움 및 현실과 타협할 수 없는 얽힌 욕망이며, 고난으로 인해 수집된 감정의 스크랩북(scrapbook)이기도 하다. 그리고 신화적 존재인 뱀의 능력과 지혜에 초극적 인간인 초인(Übermensch)을 지향하는 희망을 담아 현실적 고통과 다양한 감정들을 예술로 승화시켰다. 또한 여성 캐릭터를 중심으로 패턴(pattern)과 텍스처(texture)를 결합하여 조금은 엉뚱하고 장난스러운, 그리고 대담한 일러스트레이션(illustration)을 만든다. 작품에 꼴라쥬(Collage)한 텍스쳐(texture)는 작가 자신이 입었던 옷으로 자신을 기념하는 자전적 스토리가 담겨있다. 그것은 작가를 대표하는 하나의 표식이며, 삶에 대한 애착과 삶의 긍정에서 나오는 자기애이기도 하다. 형식에 구애받지 않고 자유롭게 표현했으며, 난해하지만 독특하고 에너지가 넘친다. 또한 창의적이며 생각을 집중하고 증류하는 방법에 대해 의문을 갖게 한다.

이러한 작가의 작품은 시련과 맞닥뜨려 이겨내고자 하는 삶의 의지의 표현이며, 그 저변에는 생의 저항과 갈망, 뜨거운 에너지가 내재되어 있음도 무시할 수 없다. 또한 불확실한 미래와 고통의 현재를 끌어안고, 매일 매일 새로운 존재로 거듭나, 역동적으로 춤추는 날들을 살아내고 싶은 작가의 철학이 담겨있다. 작가는 삶의 실존이 원하는 방식대로 돌아가지 않고, 삶의 현실이 기가 막힌 상황으로 악화되어 미래가 보이지 않는다 하여도, 그럼에도 불구하고 고독과 허무, 고통이 내재한 삶 까지도 기꺼이 사랑하며 춤을 추듯 살아내고 싶은 것이다. 그것은 작가 자신이 겪어가는 삶의 딜레마를 희망적으로 풀어가는 대화법이며, 또한 이 시대를 살아가는 현대인들이 공존할 수밖에 없는 시련을 잘 이겨내기를 바라는 애정과 간절한 기도가 담겨있다.
영원한 것은 없으니 그것이 때로 슬픔이기도 하지만 유한적인 것이 때로는 큰 위로가 된다. 이 모든 것 또한 지나가리라.

Chatting with me series
The author thought about human suffering through Covid 19, and recalled the memories of snakes that remained trauma as a child and gave them meaning. The artist's trauma revealed by artistic inspiration is a raw and painful experience, but it reveals new changes in creation. In "chatting with me" tasks, images such as snakes and eyes are often rendered and grotesque. These works are linked to the mirror work "the backside of reflection" that has been done so far, and there is a consistent flow of thought about human finiteness and ambivalence, existence and existence hidden behind the shape. It also contains the agony and thoughts of a self-reflective and superhuman life.

The artist set the snake, the most hated animal, as a motif and put it in the work in a multidisciplinary sense. It is an unbearable ordeal, an idea that grows too large in imagination, a hidden fear, and an irreconcilable tangled desire with reality, and a scrapbook of emotions collected by hardship. In addition, realistic pain and various emotions were sublimated into art with the hope of aiming for ̈bermensch, a superhuman, in the ability and wisdom of snakes, a mythical being. In addition, pattern and texture are combined around female characters to create a slightly eccentric, playful, and bold illustration. The texture, which is collaged in the work, is a clothing worn by the artist himself and contains an autobiographical story that commemorates him. It is a sign that represents the author, and it is also a self-love that comes from attachment to life and affirmation of life. It is expressed freely regardless of form, and is difficult but unique and energetic. It is also creative and makes you question how to focus and distill your thoughts.

The artist's work is an expression of his will to overcome the ordeal, and it cannot be ignored that life's resistance, longing, and hot energy are inherent at the base. It also contains the artist's philosophy of embracing the uncertain future and the present of pain, being reborn as a new being every day, and living the days of dancing dynamically. Even if the existence of life does not work the way it wants, and the reality of life deteriorates into a wonderful situation and the future is not seen, the artist is willing to love and dance to even a life with loneliness, emptiness, and pain. It is a dialogue method that hopefully solves the dilemma of life that the artist himself is going through, and it also contains affection and earnest prayer for modern people living in this era to overcome the ordeal that is bound to coexist.
Nothing lasts forever, so it is sometimes sadness, but being finite is sometimes a great comfort. All this will pass as well.

뮤즈 킴 작가는 신학과 교육학을 전공했으며, 전공한 분야에서 다양한 활동을 해오다가 40세가 넘어 그림을 시작하였다. 사)수채화협회 공모전에서 대상을 수상하였고 그 계기로 화가에 입문하게 되었다. 이후 뒤늦게 홍익대학교 미술대학원에서 회화전공으로 석사졸업(M.F.A)을 하였다. 최근에는 작가 예명을 Kim mi young에서 Muse Kim으로 바꾸어 뮤즈 킴으로 불리운다.
