수잔 K. 랭거(Susanne K. Langer)는 정신활동을 포함한 모든 인간의 활동은 본질적으로 상징성을 지닌다고 믿고, '예술은 인간의 감정을 상징하는 형식들의 창조'라고 정의한다. 상징은 지각된 경험을 명료화시킨 결과 부수적으로 따라오는 것으로써 관념이나 개념을 소통시키는 기능을 한다.

관념이 명료화되는 과정을 '변형(Transformation)'이라고 부르는데, 변형의 과정에서 가장 중요한 것은 '추상' 작용이다. 즉, 상징이란 그것을 통해서 우리가 추상을 행할 수 있는 일종의 고안품이라고 정의한다. 하나의 상징은 추상을 수단으로 해서 인간의 '감정(Feelings), 감성(Emotion)'을 표현한다.

나는 인간의 삶 자체를 추상으로 생각한다. 지금 이 시간에 일어나는 일은 극히 짧은 순간에 일어나는 현상이다. 이 글을 쓰고 있는 순간도 흘러가는 시간과 함께 과거 속의 한 정점에 자리 잡고 있다.

그래서 나는 작가 노트에 '삶은 추상이다. 누구나 지나간 시간을 반추하고 다가 올 시간을 유추한다. 현실의 순간은 찰나이다.' 라고 적어놓고 있다. 지나간 시간을 되새기고 다가올 시간을 미리 가늠하며 살아가는 우리의 삶은 추상일 수밖에 없다. 이 삶의 표상은 하나의 상징(象徵)이다.

Susanne K. Langer believes that all human activities, including mental activity, are inherently symbolic, and defines "Art is the creation of forms that symbolize human emotions." Symbols serve to communicate ideas or concepts as a result of clarifying perceived experiences and incidentally following them.

The process in which ideas are clarified is called "Transformation," and the most important thing in the process of transformation is the "Abstract" action. In other words, symbolism is defined as a kind of invention in which we can perform abstracts. One symbol expresses the "Feelings" and "Emotion" of humans by means of an abstract.

I think of human life itself as an abstract thing. What's happening at this time is a phenomenon that happens in a very short period of time. The moment I'm writing this is also at the pinnacle of the past, with time passing by.

So I wrote in my note, 'Life is abstract. Everyone recounts the past and deduces the time to come. The moment of reality is instantaneous.' Our lives can only be abstract as we reflect on past times and gauge the time to come. This image of life is a symbol.

나는 절규한다. 투영된 슬라이드의 빛을 받으며 조각조각 나누어진 색채 속에 나만의 빛을 찾으려고...

빛깔들은 끊임없이 맴돌아 다시 나뉘고 나의 잔상에 남는다.

나는 찾으며 절규한다.

구상화, 사실화를 수필, 소설이라고 한다면 추상화는 詩다.

I scream as receiving beams from projected slides in pieces of divided colors. To find my own lights…

Lights spin round endless and divided again and remained in my after image.

I seek and scream.

If a representational painting and a realistic painting are essay and novel, an abstract painting is poetry.

예술은 긴장인 동시에 해방이다.

음악은 일정한 길이와 높낮이를 갖고 있는 음표의 집합이다. 따라서 음악을 다른 의미로 수학의 수열이라고 할 수 있고, 마찬가지로 미술도 스펙트럼의 조합이라고 말할 수 있다. 그 스펙트럼의 분포와 조합에 따라서 전하는 파장의 느낌이 미묘하고 절묘하다.

이러한 구조위에서 작가의 감성은 스펙트럼의 미묘한 변화위에 투영되고 녹아든다. 그 미세한 변화들은 그 화면이 내포하고 있는 원소를 끄집어내어 우리의 망막에 뿌린다. 조형적 요소인 단풍, 추수를 앞둔 황금 들녘, 낙엽 등은 물론 석양의 굴뚝 연기와 스산한 바람, 늦가을 서리. 그리고 뜨겁고 열정적인 여름이 지난 후의 쓸쓸함과 적막한 가을의 허전함까지도...

작가의 감성은 화면 속에 녹아 많은 이야기를 하고 있다.

그 이야기를 듣고 느끼고 웃고 눈물을 흘리는 것은 감상자의 몫이다.

삶은 추상이다. 누구나 지나간 시간을 반추하고, 다가올 시간을 유추한다.

현실의 순간은 찰나이다.

Art is tension while it is liberation.

Music is a collection of a musical note which has regular length and high and low. In accordance of this, music could be different meaning of progression of mathematics, similarity the fine arts could be compounding of spectrum. Deliverable feelings of wavelength according to these spectrums’ distribution and compounding are delicate and exquisite.

Above from this structure, a painter’s sensibility is projected and melted on slight changes of spectrum. This minutely changes take elements out and it spray them out what it contains in a canvas into the retina.

Formative element tinged autumnal leaves, a golden open filed ahead to a harvest, fallen leaves, so on and smoke from the evening sun chimney, frost in the late autumn as well as gloomy solitude and emptiness in autumn after hot flaming summer...

A painter’s sensibility melted on a canvas and tells many stories.

To listen to this story and feel, laugh, and shed tears are a share of its viewer.

Life is an abstraction. Everyone ruminate the time past and infer time to come. A moment of the present is an instant.
