동양의 전통미학 가운데 ‘무언(無言)’의 아름다움은 최고로 숭상되었다. ‘무언’의 아름다움은 침묵의 방식으로 사물을 체험하는 것이 아니라, ‘사람의 언어’를 버리고 ‘하늘의 언어’에 도달할 경계로 ‘하늘의 언어’는 인간의 지식으로 말하는 것이 아니라 생명 본연의 모습이 드러난 것이다. ‘백자’와 ‘떨어지는 꽃’을 통해 작가가 우리에게 보여주고자 하는 속내는 바로 인간과 세상의 충돌로부터 벗어나 우주의 원초적 생명력이 넘실거리는 ‘광대무변’한 세계로의 회귀(回歸)가 아닐까? 동양 예술의 오묘한 경지는 형식을 넘어선 ‘광대무변’의 세계에 있다. 형상은 다만 이 세계로 향하는 서곡일 뿐이다.

In fact, among other traditional aesthetics of the Orient, the beauty of “wordlessness” was praised in excelsis. The beauty of “tacitness” does not deal with experiencing things in the silent form, but abandoning “human language” and having a demarcation to reach “celestial language”. This “celestial language” is not spoken by human knowledge but the intrinsic aspect of life is revealed through it. What artist Bae intends to show us through “white porcelains” and “falling blossoms” could be the return to the “boundless and immeasurable” world full of primordial vitality of universe, beyond the collision between humans and the world. The profound stage of the Oriental arts consists in the “boundless and immeasurable” world beyond any convention and formality. The imagery or shape is a mere prelude heading for this world.

■ 배정하는 대한민국의 화가이다. 그는 1964년 경상북도 김천에서 출생하여 김천고등학교를 졸업한 후 상경하여 홍익대학교 미술대학에서 미술학사, 홍익대학교 교육대학원에서 미술교육학석사, 동방문화대학원대학교에서 ‘박생광 화풍’을 연구하여 문화예술학 박사 학위 취득하였다. 배정하 작가는 예술의 전당, 서울시립미술관, 중국앙보루미술관 등에서 20번의 개인전을 개최하였으며 대한민국 미술대전 ‘특선’ 및 입선, 미술세계대상전 ‘통합최우수상’, 북경올림픽 기념 국제미술대전 ‘동상’ 칭타오국제아트페스티발 ‘우수작가상’ 등 여러 공모전에서 수십회의 수상 경력이 있다. 국제전 및 단체전으로는 1989년 지금우리들전(展)을 시작으로 400여회를 참여하였고 아트페어로는 MANIF아트페어, NICAF아트페어, 한국구상대제전, 아시아현대미술제전, 방글라데시비엔날레 등에 초대되어 참여하였다. 이러한 작품 활동을 인정받아 2012년에 대한민국미술대전 초대작가, 서울시 미술협회 초대작가로 선정되었으며 현재까지 화가로서 왕성한 활동을 펼치고 있다.
