작가 노트
무상(無常)을 보고 그리다
저 잡초들이 바람에 기대어 등을 세우고 있다. 찰나의 순간일 뿐, 그 장면은 과거라는 인식의 뒤편으로 사라져버리고 어느새 잡초들은 제 푸른 몸을 숙여 새로운 바람에게 그 길을 공손히 내어주고 있다. 하나의 몸이 일어남과 구부러짐과 또 하나의 일어남과 구부러짐, 그 순간을 관찰하면서 저 무수한 불완전함의 연대에 속한 나를 본다.
인연生 인연滅
나는 이상하게도 소외된 것들에게 마음이 가서 이들이 주로 나의 작업 소재가 되곤 한다. 이번 작품전시에서는 산과 들, 우리네 주변에 널린 잡초들을 볼 수 있다. 잡초는 매우 흔해서 가치가 없다고 인식되기도 하지만 뽑아도 뽑아도 끝없이 나오는 생명의 근성은 놀랍기 그지없다. 잡초가 무성히 자라 군락을 일군 모습에서 나는 사람과 세상의 모습을 본다. 저렇듯 잡초처럼 얽힌 인연으로 한 세상 살아가는 사람들.. 사람은 제각기 깊거나 얕거나 직접적이거나 간접적이거나 인연 맺으며 한평생을 산다. 선한 관계를 맺기도 하지만 때론 악한 관계에서 생채기 내다가도 또다시 새로운 인연을 맺기도 한다. 인연生인연滅이다.
또 나는 자연을 이미지로 표현하면서 물질계[色]의 본질이 우리의 관념 속에 저장되어 있듯 있거나 혹은 없다고 하는 식으로 고정된 것이 아니라, 조건에 의해 그 순간에 임시적으로 있을 뿐임[空]을 표현하고자 하였다. 선종의 요서(要書)인 <돈오입도요문론>에서 공(空)을 양극단 - 있음과 없음, 선과 악, 사랑함과 미워함 등 - 에 걸리지 않는 지혜라고 한 것과 맥을 같이한다. 이 공(空)의 상태는 자연에만 국한되지 않는다. 生하고 滅할뿐 본질적으로는 공(空)한데 우리들은 사유에 꼼짝없이 걸려 자유스럽지 못할 때가 많다. 자연의 본질을 형상적으로 나타내어 묻고 싶었다. 실상이 이렇게 무상한데 걸림 없이 자유롭게 살고 있냐고. 혹시 허깨비에 붙들려 살고 있지는 않은지?

純一한 밤
평소 밤에 주로 작업을 한다. 때론 새벽녘까지 작업이 이어지기도 한다. 나의 작업과정은 일련의 사마타적 명상태도와 닮아있다. 명상은 어떤 대상에 대한 주의 집중으로 크게 집중[samatha]과 통찰[vipassana]의 방법으로 나누는데 나의 작업은 주로 전자의 방법과 비슷하다고 할 수 있다. 나의 명상 주제는 형상(image)이지만 그것에 대해 집중된 작업이 진행될수록 고요함과 희열감을 느끼면서 정신이 하나로 순일해감을 느낀다. 시간과 공간에 대한 관념도 사라지며 나는 그저 작업을 하고 있다. 어느새 밤이 지나고 새벽이 온다. 무상(無常)한 밤이다.

See and Picture Transience
Those weeds lean against the wind and set their backs. It is only an instant moment, the scene disappears behind the recognition of the past, at the moment, the weeds are giving the way to the new wind with their blue body bowed down politely. One body looks at me belonging to the age of that innumerable imperfection, with observing the moment in the rising and bending, another rising and bending.
Birth by Karma, and Extinction by Karma
Strangely, I am interested in the alienated things, and they become my work materials. In this exhibition, we can see mountains, weeds around us. Weeds are so common that they are perceived as worthless, but their vitality that comes out endlessly even when pulled out is not surprising. I look at the shape of people and the world in the weeds which grow thick and form a patch. People living their whole life through a tangled karma such as weeds. Each of them lives during a lifetime connected with deep, shallow, direct, or indirect karma. Sometimes a good relationship is made, but sometimes a new karma is formed again even if they are given a scratch in their mind. Everything is born by Karma, and extincted by Karma.
I have also tried to express nature as an image, in which the essence of the material system(colors) as stored in our notions, not fixed that there is or is not, but expressed that the condition only temporarily exists at that moment. In the Letter of the Book of Zen Buddhism, <DonoYipdoYomun Ron>, associating the emptiness with the wisdom that does not depend on both extremes - existence and absence, good and evil, love and hate - and so on. The state of this emptiness is not limited to nature. We are only born and extinct, in essence it is empty, but we are not often free from our contemplation. I would ask in a question, expressing the essence of nature in a figurative way. In actual, even though a real image evokes so transitory, do you live freely without hesitation? Maybe, we might live with being lured by an illusion.

At a Serene Night
I usually work at night. Occasionally, work continues until dawn. My work process resembles a series of samatian meditative attitudes. Meditation is concentrated on the attention of an object and is largely divided into methods of concentration[samatha] and insight [vipassana]. My artwork is mainly similar to the former method. My meditation motif is an image, but as I concentrate on it, I feel a sense of serenity and joy as my work progresses. The notion of time and space disappears and I am just working on it. Suddenly the night goes and the dawn comes. It is a serene night.
