어린 시절 배가 정박 된 부두 너머 망망대해가 펼쳐져 있고 유서 깊은 숲과 계곡이 근접해 있는 자연적인 환경에서 살아왔다.
자고 일어나 눈을 뜨면 제일 먼저 언제나 설레고 벅찬 마음으로 바깥을 바라보는 것이 일상의 기쁨과 행복이었다.
매일 신선한 감동을 주는 바다를 바라보는 것이 어쩌면 기억 속에 존재하는 나의 사유의 시작이었을 것이다.
그러한 멋진 자연 환경 속에서 삶을 살아온 것이 행운이자 축복이었던 나는 오랫동안 다양한 예술 활동에 참여해 왔다.
그 후로 숲에서 살 때도 유년 시절 바라보았던 벅참과 설레임이 다시 한번 작용했음을 알고 자연에 최적화된 자신을 돌아보게 되었다.
스스로 삶을 깨닫게 해주는 자연 속에서 살게 되는 것은 간혹 물질적 어려움이 있을 때도 슬기롭게 이겨내는 정신적 자산이 발휘되는 경험이 되었다.
그것은 예술가로 사는 나의 삶에 큰 동력이 되었다.
<시간의 연속성 - 붉은꽃> (The continuation of time -Redflower) 연작은 이러한 자연 속에서 영원한 시간을 얻고자 하는 나의 절실한 열망에서 비롯되었다.
초기에는 작품의 주제어인 꽃을 통해 화려한 열정을 표현하였으나 열망의 주체자는 언제나 감추어져 있었다.
이 후 변질되어 가는 혼탁과 혼돈의 물질 문명 속에서 인간성을 회복하고 영원한 행복을 얻을 수 있는 것은 자연이라는 것을 절실하게 이야기하고 싶었다.
그런 의미로 유순한 눈동자를 지닌 초식 동물들과 더불어 자연치유를 제시하는 작품을 표현하고자 했다.
2018년에 이어서 2019년도의 화두는 자연을 통한 평화 공존에 확대된 열망을 담았다.
신비로운 숲을 배경으로 새로운 역동적인 대상이 추가되었는데 바로, 치타 cheetah이다.
내용적으로 볼 때, 품성이 순한 초식 동물의 표현에서 특별히 맹수 동물인 치타가 나타난 일대 전환의 배경에는 ‘쇼베 동굴’의 벽화에서 영감을 받게 된 연유가 있다.
쇼베동굴의 벽화는 유네스코에서는 기원전 36000년 전이라는 연구가 나왔으며, 방사선 탄소 측정으로는 29000년~32000년 전이라는 결과가 나왔다.
이 동굴은 라스코 벽화나 알타미라 동굴 벽화보다 훨씬 정교한 묘사로 학계를 놀라게 했는데 코뿔소. 곰. 사자. 표범 등 73점의 동물들이 현대미술의 경지를 넘나드는 놀라운 테크닉으로 표현되었다.
쇼베 동굴이 산사태로 입구가 막혀져서 그대로 봉인 된 이유로 1995년에서야 세상 밖에 알려진 벽화는 기원 전에 이미 피카소를 뛰어넘는 컨테포러리 한 회화로 표현되었음을 알 수 있다.
아프리카 토속품에서 모티브를 얻은 피카소도 이 벽화를 보았다면 흥분과 더불어 자신의 작품에 반영시켰을 것으로 예상이 된다.
벽화는 지금 보존을 위해 한정된 통행이 이루어져 있으며 벽화 속 맹수들은 두려움이나 혐오의 대상이 아니라 인간이 숭배하는 샤먼적인 존재로 부각되어있다.
나는 작품 구상의 새로운 대상으로 쇼베동굴 벽화 속 거대한 몸집의 사자나 표범,호랑이보다 빼어나게 날렵하고 장식적 이미지가 돋보이는 치타를 선택했다.
아래 작품 속의 동물들은 종류는 다르지만 서로 배려하고 협력하는 평화 공존의 존재들로 표현하고자 했다
특히 치타는 자연 속 평화와 균형을 위해 스스로 수비를 하는 착한 수호자의 의미를 내포하고 있다.
