TEAF18 | Once a God –The Myth of Future Refuge In myths across the world, god is believed as the creator of the world we live in. In the late 19th century, however, one philosopher claimed that “god is dead.” Almost a century has passed since that claim, but people still create, remember, and forget countless gods. The theme of the 2018 Taehwa River Eco Art Festival is about these countless and forgotten (or soon will be) gods. This exhibition sheds light on those that were once considered as gods, creators of this universe. These gods are referred to as “actors” in this exhibition, because however insignificant these gods are to us in the present, they were once believed to have played a very active role in building this world. Living things like human, whales, and ants, as well as elements, such as wind and water are “actors” that created and shaped the world we live in now. The past and future co-exists, intersects, and collides in the moment of time formed by these countless actors. By placing emphasis on the nonlinearity of time and the system of simultaneous binary oppositions, this exhibition reflects on the momentary present. This exhibition also traces the impact of “actors” in the present through the terraformed Taehwa River by human, substances, and symbols. Throughout time, Taehwa River played different roles, including a habitat for survival, a base for industrialization, and a place for recreation. Inspired by the many faces of Taehwa River, this exhibition relates to the myths, historic documents, and memories collectively created by countless actors alongside the nature and different (but coexisting) phases in time surrounding the river. TEAF 18 ‘Once a God-The Myth of Future Refugees’ is a story to remind us about the impact of gods who are like stars that used to shine in the sky, but now outshined by light pollution.
Temporality and Performance The curatorial direction of TEAF 18 is based on the “installation” aspect of the art festival. What are the attractive aspects of installation art? How to avoid being labelled as an exhibition of sculptures or nature art? These questions led to keywords such as “temporality” and “performance” to identify the concept of this exhibition. Artists were invited to explore the temporal and disposable nature of installation art. Based on the history and environment of Taehwa River, artists considered site-specific works that were experimental and temporal. The space and artworks of the exhibition welcome visitors to interact with the artworks by using their senses and body. Furthermore, there is no fixed path for visitors to follow the themes of the exhibition. Visitors can choose wherever to begin and end their journey through the exhibition.
