자연에서 시작된 공상의 풍경은 점차 나의 일상에 침투하기 시작했다. 익숙하던 장소-타인과의 관계에서 조차 공상은 의식의 틈을 매우며 나의 역사의 조각을 완성시킨다. 결국 나는 내가 체험하는 경험과 기억 속에 문득문득 떠오르는 출처가 불분명하고 무분별하게 혼합된 공상을 그림에 담는다. 이런 공상들은 직접 겪은 1차적 이미지와 2차적, 3차적 이미지가 결합된 것으로 일어나지 않았으나 일어날지도 모르는 심연의 일들에 대한 불안감을 가시화 하는 작업을 하고 있다.
광목천에 먹이 번지고 메겨지는 방식으로 작업한다. 동양에서의 먹은 현색(玄色)이라 하여 태양의 빛이 없어도 존재하는 우주의 본색을 상징한다. 따라서 이것이 지닌 농담의 차이는 우주만물을 구성하는 수만가지 색을 의미하며 천변만화한다. 이처럼 심플한 검정이 아닌 다양한 스펙트럼을 가진 먹은 나의 이야기을 담기에 적합한 소재이다. 먹은 다른 어떤 재료보다 물에 가장 신속하며 예민한 반응을 보인다. 붓 끝의 움직임에 따라 먹은 빠르게 때로는 느리게 광목천 위를 표류한다. 먹은 나아가려는 힘과 멈추려는 힘으로 특유의 진동, 파동을 만들며 물과 함께 떠돈다. 그렇게 떠돌다 광목천에 정착한다. 그렇게 먹이 정착하는 먹의 역사가 나의 역사와 광목천 위에 합쳐지는 것이다.
My view of the world is constructed by my experience in real life, memories from the past, and reveries. The scenes on the paintings are occurred as a blended and interwoven memories rather than in order. Familiar places and relationships are mixed with imaginary scenes creating an image of an entirely new picture that has not occurred yet but latent deeply in my mind. These images are not a direct response from my imagination but more like my feeling of apprehension and insecurity that might happen in the future.
I visualize these images by painting and spreading Muk (Korean ink) on cotton cloth. This ink makes black color and responds very well in water. The ink spreads subtly with different speed depending on the brush stroke. The tension between the ink trying to proceed and to halt creates unique wavy patterns after finally permeated on the cloth. In Eastern culture, the color of muk represents the true color of the universe that can exist without the light of the sun. Seemingly black, the variations of depth in the color symbolizes every color that composes all creation in the universe.
