핑크 노이즈 팝업
인스턴트 커피(Instant Coffee)에서 밴쿠버와 한국 작가 간의 거리를 좁혀 줄 여러 설치예술과 합작품을 만나볼 수 있는 <핑크 노이즈 팝업>(Pink Noise Pop Up) 전시를 최초로 개최합니다 (2018년 3월 9일~4월 5일). 참여 작가 중 제닌 프레이 주틀리(Jeneen Frei Njootli), 크리스타 벨레 스튜어트 (Krista Belle Stewart), 론 트란(Ron Tran), 케이시 웨이(Casey Wei)는 이번 전시를 통해 김가람, 얄루(임지연) 등 국내 작가와 함께 한국에 첫 선을 보일 예정입니다. 또한 바네사 콴(그런트 갤러리 큐레이터) 및 여인영(스페이스 원 디렉터)이 <핑크 노이즈 팝업>의 큐레이터를 맡았습니다. 이 전시회는 스페이스 원 및 원앤제이 플러스원에서 동시에 열리며 그런트 갤러리(밴쿠버)가 공동으로 마련한 자리입니다.
아티스트 콜렉티브인 인스턴트 커피에서는 이번 행사를 통해 원앤제이 플러스원의 ‘화이트 큐브’을 핑크 노이즈로 가득 찬 창의적 실험공간으로 탈바꿈하려 합니다. 이 분홍빛 울림은 인간의 생체리듬과 독특하게 맞물리는 주파수를 가진 소리로써 배경 잡음을 가려주는 역할을 합니다. 점점 더 많은 기업에서 이 핑크 노이즈를 치료실에서 직원의 스트레스를 해소하거나 강의실에서 집중력을 높이는 등 직원의 생산성을 높이는 용도로 널리 사용하고 있습니다. 인스턴트 커피는 다양한 분홍빛을 뿜어내는 화려한 분수, 샹들리에처럼 수놓은 형광등, 여러 다양한 형태로 배치가 가능한 모듈식 가구를 통해 이 핑크 노이즈를 해석했습니다. 정교한 설치예술작품 속에서 참여 작가의 작품을 만나볼 수 있으며, 팝업 스토어 형태의 공간에서는 각 작가의 연작, 디자인 작품, 장식, 퍼포먼스 등이 기다리고 있습니다. 제닌 프레이 주틀리, 크리스타 벨레 스튜어트, 론 트란, 케이시 웨이, 김가람, 얄루 작가는 다양한 시도와 경험부터 공감을 불러일으킬 수 있는, 연구를 통해 체화된 일련의 접근법까지 함께 공유할 예정입니다. 사립 갤러리와 예술가들이 운영하는 대안 공간 속에서 작품을 구상했던 <핑크 노이즈 팝업>은 복잡한 도시의 사회, 경제적 환경과 예술이 상호작용 하는 과정을 조명하고자 합니다.
Instant Coffee is pleased to present the inaugural exhibition of Pink Noise Pop Up (March 9 – April 5, 2018), a series of installations and collaborations that seeks to strengthen the relationship between artists in Vancouver and Seoul. Four of the participating artists are showing in Korea for the first time: Jeneen Frei Njootli, Krista Belle Stewart, Ron Tran and Casey Wei. They are joined by local Korean artists Ga Ram Kim and Yaloo. Pink Noise Pop Up is curated by Vanessa Kwan (Curator of grunt gallery) and Inyoung Yeo (Director of Space One). The exhibition unfolds simultaneously at Space One (Seoul) and ONE AND J. +1 (Seoul), and is presented in partnership with grunt gallery (Vancouver).
Artist collective Instant Coffee will transform the white cube of ONE AND J. +1 into an aesthetic experiment in pink noise — a frequency of sound that has a unique relationship to human biorhythms and the ability to mask background noise. It is increasingly used by companies to increase productivity among employees, by therapists to relieve stress and by educators to focus attention. Instant Coffee’s interpretation of pink noise will include colorful water fountains lit in various hues of pink, florescent lights arranged as a chandelier, and modular furniture that can be arranged in different configurations. The work of participating artists will be showcased within the elaborate installation, populating the pop-up shop with artist multiples, design work, decor and performances. Frei Njootli, Stewart, Tran, Wei, Kim and Yaloo represent a diversity of practices and experience, but share the thread of responsive, research-based and embodied approaches. Working within the context of both commercial and artist-run spaces — as well as the neighborhoods they occupy — Pink Noise Pop Up highlights the ways art interacts with the complex social and economic conditions of the city.

인스턴트 커피는 위니펙, 밴쿠버를 중심으로 예술이라는 서비스를 제공하고자 예술가와 큐레이터가 모여 만든 단체입니다. 2000년에 처음 문을 연 온타리오 아트 갤러의 “UDT”, 토론토 MKG127 갤러리의 “쉬운 길을 택하다(Take the Easy Way)”, 밴쿠버 시몬 프레이저 대학 테크 갤러리의 “영웅, 악당, 세일즈맨, 부모, 들러리, 그리고 하인(The hero, the villain, the salesman, the parent, a sidekick and a servant)” 등 수 많은 개인전을 개최했습니다. 최근에는 캐나다 버나비에서 공공예술 “컬러(Colours)” 프로젝트를 시작했으며, 밴쿠버 시의 필드하우스 스튜디오(Fieldhouse Studio) 레지던시 프로그램에 당선되어 시에서 무상 제공하는 스튜디오에 입주하기도 했습니다. 또한 밴쿠버 2010 문화 올림피아드(Cultural Olympiad), 함부르크 도시, 2007 콜롬비아 엔쿠엔트로 인터네셔널 메달리온(Encuentro Internacional Medellin), 밴쿠버 아트 갤러리(Vancouver Art Gallery), 그레이터 빅토리아 아트 갤러리(Art Gallery of Greater Victoria) 등의 장소에서 특별 프로젝트와 설치예술을 선보였습니다. 현재 인스터트 커피에는 진한 고(Jinhan Ko), 제니퍼 파파라로(Jenifer Papararo), 칸 리(Khan Lee) 등의 작가가 활동하고 있으며 최근까지 켈리 리칸(Kelly Lycan, 2005~2015), 케이트 몬로(Kate Monro, 1999~2014), 세실리아 베르코빅(Cecilia Berkovic, 2000~2014)이 함께했습니다. 그 외에도 존 사사키(Jon Sasaki), 에밀리 호그(Emily Hogg), 티모시 꼬모(Timothy Comeau), 스테판 크로우허스트(Stephen Crowhurst) 등이 인스턴트 커피를 거쳐갔습니다.
분부트 귀친 원주민연합(Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation) 자치구역 출신인 제닌 프레이 주틀리는 리메트리에이트 콜렉티브(ReMatriate Collective)에서 공동 크리에이터로 활동하고 있다. 유콘과 자치권을 인정받은 원주민들이 사는 코스트 샐리시(Coast Salish) 지역을 중심으로 다양한 아티스트, 공동체, 청소년, 지역과 공동 창작을 전개해 왔으며, 소리, 퍼포먼스, 패션, 워크샵, 바비큐 등을 통해 예술을 풀어낸다. 또한 최근 2017 밴쿠버 아티스트 현대예술협회상(Contemporary Art Society of Vancouver Artist Prize)을 수상하기도 했다.
크리스타 벨레 스튜어트는 오래된 소재 속에 담긴 복잡한 요소를 이끌어 내 친밀감, 우연은 물론 다양한 시점의 역사들이 시간을 초월하여 만날 수 있는 지점을 형성하는 재능을 인정받았다. 그녀는 비디오, 사진, 디자인, 하루살이와 같은 물건, 섬유 등의 소재와 작업하여 속이 투명하게 들여다 보이는 매개체를 통해 개인과 제도의 역사 간 간극을 메우려 노력해왔다. 그 동안 뉴욕 브룩클린 ISCP(International Studio and Curatorial Program), 위니펙 소재 Plug In ICA(Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art), 밴쿠버 아트 갤러리(Vancouver Art Gallery), 노스밴쿠버 프레젠테이션 하우스 갤러리(Presentation House Gallery), 밴쿠버 현대예술갤러리(Contemporary Art Gallery), 토론토 머서 유니온(Mercer Union) 등지에서 작품을 선보였다. 오카나간 자치지구(Okanagan Nation) 내 어퍼 니콜라 밴드 부족(Upper Nicola Band)의 일원인 그녀는 밴쿠버를 중심으로 현재 활동하고 있다.
론 트란은 조소, 사진, 비디오, 퍼포먼스, 설치작품 등 다양한 매개체를 이용하여 공공 공간과 사적 공간, 권위와 정체성 간의 경계를 모호하게 만드는 작품에 몰두해 왔다. 사이공에서 태어나 1987년 밴쿠버로 이사를 한 후, 밴쿠버 소재 에밀리 카 아트 디자인 대학(Emily Carr University of Art + Design)에서 미술학사를 마쳤다. 캐나다, 유럽, 아시아 등지에서 단체 및 개인 전시를 열었으며 시장이 주는 예술상(Mayor’s Arts Award) 수상, 베를린 쿤스틀러하우스 베타니엔 스튜디오 입주 프로그램 당선 등의 성과를 올렸다. 또한 파이돈 프레스(Phaidon Press)에서 발간한 “미래 예술도시: 12세기 아방가르드(Art Cities of the Future: 21st Century Avant-Gardes)”에 작품이 실리기도 했다.
케이시 웨이는 밴쿠버에서 다양한 장르를 넘나들며 아티스트, 영화감독, 음악가로 활동하고 있다. 처음에는 영화(2012년 작 “흐린 빛깔들(Murky Colors)”, 2013년 작 “아버지와 아들(Father and Son / 父与子)”)를 제작하다 예술, 음악 및 전체적 예술 공동체를 넘나드는 작품(2014년 작 “킹스게이트 몰에서 생긴 일(Kingsgate Mall Happenings)”, 2015년 작 “차이나타운에서 생긴 일(Chinatown Happenings)”, 2015년~현재 연작 “아트 록?(art rock?)”, 2017년 작 “노래방 뮤직비디오 공짜 가게(Karaoke Music Video Free Store)”)을 만들기 시작했다. 또한 2016년부터 “대중적 난해성(popular esoteric)”이라는 이름 하에 여러 작품을 쏟아내는 음악/출판 레이블 프로젝트 아고니 클럽(Agony Klub)을 시작했다. 이후 카미카제 너스(Kamikaze Nurse), 헤이지(hazy), 레이트 스프링(Late Spring) 등의 이름으로 음악 프로젝트를 전개했다. 최근 밴드명 헤이지로 두 번째 앨범을 냈으며 현재 밴쿠버 음악업계에 관한 다큐멘터리를 제작 중이다.
김가람은 설치, 퍼포먼스, 뉴미디어 등의 소재를 활용한 놀이와도 같은 실험을 통해 다양한 사회 속 문화적, 사회적 이슈를 파헤친다. 첼시 예술대(Chelsea College of Art)에서 미술석사를 마친 후 KT&G 상상마당에서 열린 업데이트(UPDATE), 코너 아트 스페이스(Corner Art Space)에서 전시한 “아젠다 헤어 살롱(AGENDA hair salon)”, 뒤셀도프 Filmwerkstatt에서 연 “ACS#2: AGENDA hair salon” 등 여러 단독 전시를 선보였다. 최근 사비나미술관에서 “셀카 – 스스로 사진을 찍는 사람들(#Selfie – The people who take picture by themselves)”이라는 이름의 그룹쇼부터 코리아나 미술관(Space*C) 내 “더 보이스(THE VOICE)”까지 여러 프로젝트에 참여했다. 현재 금천예술공장 입주작가로 활동 중이다.
얄루(임지연)은 비디오 설치를 주로 다루는 작가다. 2015년 시카고 예술원(Art Institute of Chicago)에서 미술석사를 마쳤으며, 비디오 데이터 뱅크(Video Data Bank)로부터 최초로 린 블루멘탈기념 장학프로그램(Lyn Blumenthal Memorial Scholarship)에 선정되기도 했다. 뉴욕 AHL 재단에서 금상을 받았으며, 샌 프란시스코 소재 예술을 위한 헤드랜즈 센터(Headlands Center for the Arts), 오마하 소재 베미스 현대예술센터(Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts), 후쿠오카 소재 후쿠오카 아시아 예술관(Fukuoka Asian Art Museum)으로부터 전액 연구비 지원을 받기도 했다. 얄루는 그간 시카고, 뉴욕, 시애틀, 산타페이, 밴쿠버, 퀘백, 말뫼, 드레스덴, 후쿠오카, 서울 등지에서 단체 및 개인전에 참여했다.
Instant Coffee is a service-oriented artist and curatorial collective based in Winnipeg and Vancouver, Canada. Since establishing in 2000, Instant Coffee has had numerous solo exhibitions, including “UDT” at the Art Gallery of Ontario; “Take the Easy Way,” MKG127, Toronto; and “The hero, the villain, the salesman, the parent, a sidekick and a servant,” Teck Gallery at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver. Instant Coffee recently launched “Colours,” a public artwork in Burnaby, Canada, in 2015, and recently concluded a Fieldhouse Studio residency with the City of Vancouver. The collective has presented special projects and installations as part of Vancouver’s 2010 Cultural Olympiad, at Subdivision in Hamburg, as part of the Encuentro International Medellin 07 in Colombia, at Hotel Maria Kapel in The Netherlands, the Toronto Sculpture Garden, the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Instant Coffee's current members are Jinhan Ko, Jenifer Papararo and Khan Lee; recent members include Kelly Lycan (2005-2015), Kate Monro (1999-2014) and Cecilia Berkovic (2000-2014), previous members include Jon Sasaki, Emily Hogg, Timothy Comeau and Stephen Crowhurst.
Jeneen Frei Njootli is a member of the self-governing Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation and is a co-creator of the ReMatriate Collective. Based between the Yukon and unceded Coast Salish territories, she works collaboratively with artists, communities, youth and the land. Sound, performance, fashion, workshops and barbecues are some of the ways Frei Njootli’s practice takes shape. She was recently the recipient of the 2017 Contemporary Art Society of Vancouver Artist Prize.
Krista Belle Stewart is known for her ability to draw out the complexities of archival material that allow for both intimacy, coincidence and an atemporal meeting of histories across time. Working with video, photography, design, ephemera and textiles, Stewart straddles the gaps between personal and institutional histories through transparent mediation. Her work has been exhibited at the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP), Brooklyn, NY; Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art, Winnipeg; Vancouver Art Gallery; Presentation House Gallery, North Vancouver; Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver; and Mercer Union, Toronto. Stewart holds an MFA from Bard College, New York. She is a member of the Upper Nicola Band of the Okanagan Nation and is currently based in Vancouver.
Ron Tran employs a wide range of media, including sculpture, photography, video, performance and installation, as a means to blur the boundaries between public and private space and authorship and identity. Tran was born in Saigon and moved to Vancouver in 1987. He holds a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design, Vancouver. Tran has participated in group and solo exhibitions in Canada, Europe and Asia. He was the recipient for the Mayor’s Arts Award and the Künstlerhaus Bethanien Berlin residency. His work is featured in Art Cities of the Future: 21st Century Avant-Gardes, published by Phaidon Press.
Casey Wei is an interdisciplinary artist, filmmaker and musician based in Vancouver. Her practice has evolved from filmmaking (Murky Colors in 2012, Vater und Sohn / Father and Son / 父与子 in 2013), into works that cross over between art, music, and the community at large (“Kingsgate Mall Happenings” in 2014, “Chinatown Happenings” in 2015, the “art rock?” series 2015 – present, and the “Karaoke Music Video Free Store” in 2017). In 2016, she began Agony Klub, a music and printed matter label that releases material under the framework of the “popular esoteric.” Her music projects include Kamikaze Nurse, hazy and Late Spring. She is currently recording hazy's second album and working on a documentary about the Vancouver music scene.
Ga Ram Kim uses installation, performance and new media to uncover cultural and social issues of different societies through playful experimentation. Kim received her MFA from the Chelsea College of Arts and has participated in multiple solo exhibitions including “UPDATE” at KT&G Sangsangmadang, Seoul; “AGENDA hair salon” at Corner Art Space, Seoul; and “ACS#2: AGENDA hair salon” at Filmwerkstatt, Düsseldorf. She was recently in the group show “#Selfie – The people who take picture by themselves” at the Savina Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul; and “THE VOICE” at Coreana Museum of Art (Space*C), Seoul. She is currently an artist-in-residence at Seoul Art Space Geumcheon.
Yaloo is a South Korean-born artist working with video installation. She received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2015. She was the first recipient of the Lyn Blumenthal Memorial Scholarship from Video Data Bank. She received the Gold Prize from the AHL Foundation (New York). She received a full fellowship from the Headlands Center for the Arts (San Francisco), the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts (Omaha), La Bande Vidéo (Quebec) and the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (Fukuoka). Her works have been included in solo and group shows in Chicago, New York, Seattle, Santa Fe, Vancouver, Quebec City, Malmö, Dresden, Fukuoka and Seoul.
