AMC Lab이 2018년 첫 번째 전시로 소개하는 <ILLUSION> 은 극과 극의 작업 방식을 선보이는 아티스트 구지윤과 이은우의 2인전이다. 구지윤은 일상에서 관찰하고 경험한 사건들을 캔버스에 직관적으로 표현하는 반면, 이은우는 철저한 계산에 따라 만들어진 작품을 선보인다. 여러 겹의 물감 층이 쌓여 만들어진 양감을 통해 이미지가 생성되기도 하고 소멸되기도 하는 추상화 작업을 하는 구지윤과 사물의 특성을 포착해 강조함으로써 그 사물의 용도를 없애는 작가 이은우가 만나서 함께 공간을 꾸민다.
구지윤(b.1982)은 매일 아침 눈을 뜰 때마다 크고 작은 뉴스를 접하는 현대인들의 삶에서 우리가 느끼는 감정에 초점을 맞춘다. 끊임없이 새로운 것이 생성되고 기존의 것은 소멸되는 현대사회에서 우리는 무엇을 느끼며 살아가고 있을까? 작가가 자주 다루는 소재 중 하나인 공사현장은 강박적으로 새로운 것을 찾는 현대사회를 가장 잘 나타내는 곳이기도 하다. 파괴와 소멸을 통해 창조가 이루어지는 반복적인 틀 안에서 새로움은 더 이상 새롭게 느껴지지 않고 새로운 것을 갈망하는 현대인의 갈증은 오히려 더 커지고 공허감은 채워지지 않는다. 구지윤은 이러한 불만족, 공허함, 허무감을 얼굴-풍경 연작과 공사현장을 소재로 한 회화를 통해 나타내고 있다. 반복되는 붓질을 통해 여러 겹으로 더해진 물감 층은 우발적으로 이미지를 만들어내기도 하고 없애기도 한다. 작가에게 영감을 준 사건들은 캔버스 위에서 여러 겹의 붓질이 더해지며 실루엣만 남는다. 관람객은 그 형태를 알 수도, 모를 수도 있는 반추상회화 작품들을 바라보며 작가가 느끼는 불안감을 공유하게 된다.
구지윤은 한국예술종합학교 미술원 조형예술과를 졸업한 후, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago에서 B.F.A를, New York University에서 M.F.A를 취득했다. 2011년 뉴욕 A.I.R 갤러리에서 첫 개인전 <But Nothing Happening>을 시작으로, 175갤러리(2011), 사루비아다방(2016)에서 개인전을 진행했다. 두산갤러리 뉴욕, 두산 갤러리 서울, 자하미술관, 서울대 미술관 등의 그룹전에 참여하였고, 서울을 기반으로 작업과 전시를 이어나가고 있다. 제3회 에트로 미술대상(2014) 금상을 수상했다.
이은우(b.1982)는 우리가 일상에서 흔히 사용하는 물건들의 특성을 포착하여 재해석하는 과정을 통해 새로운 사물을 만들어낸다. 작가의 철저한 작업지시서에 따라 공장에서 생산된 작품은, 물건의 특성이 극대화되면서 원래 그 물건이 무엇이었는지 그 용도가 무엇이었는지 전혀 알 수 없는 상황을 제공한다. 한치의 오차도 없이 만들어진 매끄러운 물건들, 그 자체로 완벽하게 보이는 물건들은 언뜻 보면 우리 주위에서 흔히 보는 인테리어 소품이나 가구를 닮았다. 하지만 정확히 그것을 무엇이라고 지칭할지는 애매하다. 이은우의 작품은 현실에서 통용되는 물건들의 기능과 물건들이 서로 맺고 있는 관계에 대해 관심을 가지며 시작된다. 작가는 물건의 규격과 시각적으로 인식한 재료의 특성을 구현하지만, 재해석하는 과정을 통해서 물건을 하나의 이미지로 제시한다. ‘돌무늬’는 제목 그대로 돌 무늬를 띄고 있지만, 스티로폼으로 제작되어 육안으로 보는 것과는 다르게 돌과 같은 무게감이 없다. 흔히 ‘돌’이라고 하면 연상되는 육중함, 단단함 등은 찾아볼 수 없다. ‘분홍색 상자 4개’ 는 4개의 상자가 쌓여 있는 이미지를 정확하게 보여준다. MDF 판넬로 만든 이 작품은 정작 물건을 담는 상자의 기능은 제거된 채 상자의 이미지로만 등장한다.
이은우는 한국예술종합학교 미술원 조형예술과를 졸업한 후, 동 대학원 석사 학위를 취득했다. 대안공간 루프(2009), 갤러리 팩토리(2014), 아트선재 프로젝트스페이스(2015)에서 개인전을 가졌다. 학고재갤러리, 아트선재센터, 토탈미술관, 성곡미술관, 아트스페이스 풀 등에서 다수의 단체전에 참여했다. 금천예술공장 및 반다넌 트러스트(노스 나우라, 호주), 그레이 프로젝트(싱가포르) 등의 레지던시 프로그램에 참가했다. 제 16회 송은미술대상(2016) 우수상을 수상했다.
The first exhibition at AMC Lab in 2018 is ILLUSION, by two artists whose work processes present clear contrasts. Jiyoon Koo intuitively expresses what she observes, experiences, and feels in her daily life, whereas Eunu Lee creates works based on thorough plans and calculations. Koo creates or deletes images in her abstract paintings by repetitive application of multiple layers of paint. Lee extracts a physical quality from an object and recreates the entity by highlighting that physical quality. Ironically, the remade entity no longer retains its practical use.
Jiyoon Koo (b.1982) focuses on what we feel in our daily lives, where creation and demolition endlessly repeat. For example, a construction site, one of Koo’s choices of subject matter, reflects our compulsive search for new things in our contemporary society. The repetitive cycle of demolition and creation leaves the new things just created no longer looking fresh to us. Our aspirations for something new intensify, and this unmet desire finally results in a sense of emptiness. Koo expresses this dissatisfaction and emptiness in her Face-Scape series and construction site paintings. Her repetitive application of multiple layers of paint spontaneously creates or erases images. The event that initially inspired the artist is transformed into a mere silhouette in her abstract paintings. We are given no concrete forms or shapes in her paintings, so we have few clues about what she is really depicting. We then share the anxiety that the artist feels.
Jiyoon Koo received her B.F.A from the Korean National University of Arts, a second B.F.A from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and her M.F.A from New York University. Her first solo show, But Nothing Happening, was held in 2011 at A.I.R gallery in New York. She also had solo shows at Gallery 175 (2011) and Project Space Sarubia (2016) in Seoul. She has participated in group shows at Doosan Gallery New York, Doosan Gallery Seoul, Zaha Museum, and the Museum of Art Seoul National University, among others. She won the gold prize at the 3rd ETRO Art Prize exhibition (2014).
Eunu Lee (b.1982) creates a new entity by capturing an object’s physical quality and reinterpreting it. Lee’s artwork is manufactured at a factory according to the artist’s strict work order. While the physical quality of the object is emphasized, the remade thing no longer has the use the original object had. The new entity also provides us with no clear clue of its new use, if any. At first glance, Lee’s perfectly made, sleek things look like small items of furniture or objects from daily use. However, we remain unsure of what exactly her remade things are. The interest in the purposes of the things used in daily life and in the relationships among those things prompted Lee to start creating this type of artwork. Visually, her works seem to follow industrial standards and to emphasize the distinct features of the materials of things. Through her reinterpretation and remaking processes, Lee presents an entity only as an image. For example, the work titled Stone Texture shows the texture of stone, precisely as the title says, but the remade entity lacks the weight of stone, as it is made of Styrofoam. Massiveness or hardness – the characteristics we often associate with stone – are absent from Lee’s Stone Texture. Her work Four Pink Cubes is another example. This work has the appearance of stacked MDF storage boxes, but it does not have the use of real storage boxes. It is only the image of stacked storage boxes.
Eunu Lee obtained both her B.F.A and M.F.A from the Korean National University of Arts. She has held solo shows at Alternative Space Loop (2009), Gallery Factory (2014), and Art Sonje Project Space (2015). She has participated in group shows at Hakgojae Gallery, Art Sonje Center, Total Museum of Contemporary Art, Sungkok Art Museum, and Alternative Space Pool, among others. She has participated in artist-in-residence programs, including Seoul Art Space-Geumchon (Seoul, Korea), Bundanon Trust (North Nowra, Australia), and Grey Projects (Singapore). She was the winner of the Excellence Prize at the 16th Song Eun Art Award exhibition (2016).
