최민규 작가의 작업은 어린 시절 중동 지방에 이주했던 경험으로부터 시작된다. 작가는 ‘강철’과 ‘기와’처럼 각자 다른 문화적 파편들을 하나의 구조물에 적용함으로써 문화적 혼란을 이해하고자 하였다. 이는 어린아이가 장난감 모형을 재조립하는 놀이 과정과 닮았다. 어린이는 자신이 이해할 수 없는 세상의 구조를 축소된 장난감을 통해 조망하며, 나아가 자신의 방식대로 재조립하고 이를 통해 세계를 이해한다.
이번 전시에서 작가는 완성된 형태의 작품을 제시하는 대신, 관객이 능동적으로 이미지를 조립해내기를 바란다. 검은 나무로 만들어진 구조물은 건축물을 닮았지만 문, 창문, 면, 장식 등 건축물의 구성요소는 비어(Blank)있다. 그 외의 작품들은 각자의 이야기를 숨기고(Hide)있다. 작가는 전자를 ‘Blank’, 후자를 ‘Hide’라고 칭한다. 만약 ‘Blank’가 숲이라면, ‘Hide’들은 그 숲을 구성하는 나무, 동물, 식물인 셈이다.
관객은 ‘Blank’에 퍼즐조각을 모으듯 ‘Hide’를 찾아(Seek)서 마음대로 조합해 나가며 전시의 전체적인 그림을 그리게 된다. 작가는 관객이 자신이 한 때 그러했듯이, 이러한 과정을 숨바꼭질(Hide and Seek)과 같은 놀이로 받아들이기를 바란다. 이 전시를 통해 관객들은 작가가 일방적으로 제시하는 작품이 아닌, 자신만의 개인적인 이야기를 완성할 수 있을 것이다.
Minkyoo Choi spent his childhood in Middle East, and applied his experience to his artwork. By combining two different architectural fragment‘steel’ and ‘kiwa’(korean traditional roof tile) into one structure, the artist intended to understand cultural confusion. This procedure seems similar with a child reassembling the toy bricks. A child understands the structure of incomprehensible society by reassembling toy bricks in his own ways. In this exhibition, instead of presenting a completed structure, Minkyoo Choi wants the audience to actively participate and build an image through his artworks.
A black wooden piece somewhat resemble builidings, but it does not contain essential components of archtecture, such as door, window, plane, etc. In other words, there is a ‘Blank’ in the structures. Besides, other artworks are hiding their own stories. An exhibiton name ‘Blank-hide and Seek’ holds artists’ supposition. Choi intended‘Blank’ to imply forest, and‘Hide’to imply trees, animals, plants which forms the forest. The audience seeks for puzzle pieces(Hide) in their own ways that could occupy forest (Blank).
The audience has their own key to complete a big picture of the whole exhibiton. The artist wants the audience to interpret his exhibition as Hide and Seek play, which himself experienced in the past as an audience. The audience can gain their own stories through this exhibiton. This exhibition not only delivers artists’ one-sided implications, it also delivers personal stories to the individual audiences.
