일우 그는 한 마리 소다. 느리고 게으른 듯한 풍모 뒤에 달관한 대범함이 있고 주위를 내리보는 듯한 성깔 속에 진솔한 포용력이 있다. 길이 있든 없든 혼자서 뚜벅뚜벅 잘도 걸어가고 깊은 속내와 매운 눈길로 세상 보는 데에 아무런 거침이 없다. 그런 그는 자유인이다. 자유인은 세상사의 겉모습에 얽매이지 않고 다른 이들의 시선에 구애받지 않는다. 그는 잃을 게 없는 사람처럼 보인다. 잃을 게 없으면 꾸미거나 드러내지도 않는 법이다. 그래서 그에게는 허와 실이 없다. 그에게는 모든 것이 불이이다. 모든 게 하나여서 불이(不二)이고 어떤 것도 다를 게 없기 때문에 불이(不異)이다.
언젠가 그의 전시회에 간 적이 있다. 실상과 허상이라는 주제였을 것이다. 그림 마다 숲속 나무에 새가 앉아 있었다. 그러나 작가가 형태와 색으로 그린 새보다 나무와 잎새가 틈으로 드러내는 그려지지 않은 새가 더 눈에 띄었다. 그려진 새가 실상이고 그려지지 않은 새가 허상이었을 것이다. 왜 허상이 그렇게 돋보였을까? 허상을 그리기 위해 실상을 그렸기 때문일 게다. 자연 속에서 보이는 대로가 곧 진실은 아니다. 진실은 눈 밖에 있는 것이 아니라 눈 안에 있기 때문이다. 그런 점에서, 두 가지가 다 새라면 실상과 허상은 서로 다를 게 없이 하나이다. 불이이다. 실상과 허상을 구분하려 든 나는 바보이다.
옛 누군가가 예술은 자연의 모방이라 한 적이 있다. 그러면서 음악이 미술보다 더 모방적이라고 썼다. 예술의 본질은 보이는 데 있는 것이 아니라 느끼는 데 있는 것이라는 말이었다. 사람의 마음을 흔들고 생각을 움직이게 한다면 실상과 허상이 어떻게 다른 둘로 나누어질 수 있겠는가? 일우가 그림이라는 이름으로 드러내고자 하는 것이 그런 것일 것이다. 허상과 실상의 구분을 없애주는 것이 상상이다. 상상은 인간의 완전한 자유영역이다. 상상하는 힘을 가진 인간만이 자유롭다. 상상으로 인간을 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것의 굴레에서 벗겨내고 자유를 누리게 하는 것이 예술이다. 박윤서에게서 문득 예술가를 보는 것은 그럴 때이다.
예술가 박윤서를 (나도 그렇고 그도 예술가라는 말을 좋아하지 않을 것이지만) 이번 전시에서 만나게 될 듯하다. 흔히 볼 수 있는 자갈밭 사진 위에 자갈 한두 점을 올려놓은 게 내가 얼핏 본 이번 작품들이었다. 처음에 나는 그가 사진 속의 자갈과 실제 자갈을 대비시켜 놓은 걸로 알았다. 그래서 있는 새와 없는 새의 변주 같은 거라 생각했다. 그러나 사진 위에 얹힌 자갈이 실제는 색을 입힌 종이모형이었다. 사진으로 찍힌 자갈은 허상으로서의 실상이고 모형으로 만들어진 자갈은 실상으로서의 허상이었다. 단순한 실상과 허상의 혼돈이 이런 것이었다. 그러나 말없이 되새김질하며 무심한 듯 둘러보는 소에게도 그것이 혼돈이겠는가? 이에 대한 생각은 보는 자의 몫이다. 이번 작품들에, 그간 그림 속에서 자유를 구하고자 모색과 방황을 거듭해 온 예술가 일우 박윤서의 진면목이 드러날 것이다.

Il Woo, he is an ox. Behind his lazy and slow looking appearance, he takes things in his life as a philosopher with boldness and deep inside of the temper looking down the surroundings, there is the genuine tolerance. No matter whether there is a road or not, he just walks boldly by himself and he is free from constrain to see the world with his deep inner thought and fierce eyes. Yet, he is a free man. A free man never be bound to exterior appearance of the world and he is indifferent from how himself looks to others. He looks like he has nothing to lose. If there is nothing to lose, there is no need to make up or show up. That is why he does not have truth and falsity. To him, everything can be explained by monism. Everything is in one so this world is explained by monism and nothing is different in this world so it is monism.
One day, I went to his exhibition. The theme was, if I remember right, reality and illusion. In his every painting, there were birds sitting on the trees in forest. But, the birds almost invisibly hidden between leafs and trees more strongly attracted my attention than the birds colored with a great form by the artist. The birds painted with color were supposed to be a reality and the invisible one was supposed to be an illusion. Why did illusion more strongly attract my attention than reality? It may be because reality was painted to depict illusion. Things are not always true as they appear in the nature, for truth is within eyes not out of eyes. In that sense, if we could say that both of them are birds, reality and illusion are not different from each other but they are one. It is monism. I am a stupid man trying to separating reality from illusion.
In old times, someone said art is an imitation of nature. And he added that music is more imitative than art. This meant that the nature of art is to feel, not to see. How could reality and illusion be divided into two different things if they stir up our minds? Ill Woo may try to reveal this by his painting. Imagination is the thing to get rid of division between illusion and reality. An ability to imagine is a completed free territory for human. Only human with the power to imagine has true freedom. It is art to strip human away from restraints of things that are not seen and things that are seen and make human feel freedom. Yoon Seo Park has the true spirit of artist in this respect.
I think I am going to see the artist, Yoon Seo Park, (I expect that he does not like to be called 'artist' as much as I don't) at this exhibition. I only had a little glimpse of pieces, showing that a couple of gravels were placed on the picture of gravelly field, displayed in the exhibition. When I first saw it, I thought that he tried to express contrast between gravel in the picture and actual gravel. So I thought it is a variation of the existent bird and non-existent bird. However, I found that the gravels, placed on the picture, were made with colored paper. The picture of gravels is a reality as illusion and the paper gravels are illusion as reality. Chaos of simple reality and illusion was just like this. However, does the ox chewing his cud in silence and looking around with insouciant face feel this chaos as well? It is up to the viewer to judge or think about those perspectives. Through the art pieces at this exhibition, true characters of artist, Yoon Seo Park who has repeated wandering and searching for freedom in paintings and will be uncovered.
