유토피아를 꿈꾸고 노래하는 어울림의 몸짓

조물주의 가장 위대한 창조물인 꽃은 생명에너지가 온 누리에 향기롭게 울려 퍼지는 가장 순수하고 아름다운 사랑과 영혼의 교향악이다. 에덴동산에 활짝 핀 꽃들의 축제에 순수한 영혼의 향기를 연주하는 선율을 따라 벌 나비가 함께 춤추는 어울림의 몸짓은 작가 김명옥의 마음의 거울이다. 바로 이곳에서 우리가 소망하는 유토피아, 즉 장자(莊子)가 말하는 ‘무하유지향(無何有之鄕)’인 하나의 이상향이 열리기 때문이다. 매혹의 향기로 서로를 감싸 안으며 소통하고 어울리는 상생의 몸짓이야말로 순수하고 따뜻한 영혼과 감성이 살아 숨 쉬는 생명공간으로서의 에덴이요 신시(神市)라고 할 수 있다. 작가 김명옥은 꽃의 향기가 넘치는 신비로운 유토피아 속에서 펼쳐지는 향연을 생명체들이 사랑을 나누며 어울리는 상생과 조화의 공간으로 그려낸다. 경건한 사랑이 넘치는 삶에 대한 긍정을 꽃밭에서의 나비의 군무처럼 유쾌하게 노래하며 우리의 마음속에서 향기를 맡으라고 손짓하고 있다. 그리고 우리가 지향할 궁극적 유토피아는 상생의 공간으로 모든 것을 포용하는 에덴의 숲이며, 그 가운데 꽃과 나비로 상징되는 오염되지 않은 순수한 자연은 작지만 큰 울림으로 우리의 영혼과 감성을 일깨울 수 있다고 한다. 이것이 작가 김명옥이 그렇게 살아가기를 갈망하는 유토피아이며, 자연과 인간이 사랑으로 함께 교감하며 어울리는 향기 넘치는 에덴의 모습이라고 할 수 있다.
김명옥의 근래 작품 속에는 순수한 생명의 상징인 꽃과 사랑의 영혼을 싣고 ‘날아다니는 빛’ 나비와의 만남이 행복하게 교감하는 유토피아의 향기가 교향악처럼 울려 퍼진다. 영혼의 향기를 머금고 꽃의 마음에 다가가기 위한 나비의 감성의 날개짓은 사랑의 스펙트럼을 뿜어내는 무지개 색깔처럼 찬란하다. 이처럼 사랑에 빠진 나비에게 한 송이 꽃은 식물로서의 개별적 존재자에 머물지 않고 영혼의 빛으로 인도하는 유토피아적 공간, 즉 에덴과 신시의 세계로 활짝 열린다. 꽃은 나비를 향해 포옹하듯 향기를 발하고 마음의 선율에 따라 허공에 나부끼는 깃발처럼 자유롭게 리듬을 탄다. 이처럼 작가가 꿈꾸는 이상향의 세계는 혼자만의 세계에 안주하는 고독한 유토피아의 세계가 아니고 순수한 영혼을 지닌 인간이 꽃과 나비와 더불어 노래하고 춤추는 어울림의 몸짓으로 표현되고 있다.
작가 김명옥에게 에덴의 꽃과 나비는 향기로움이나 아름다움으로 다가오는 단순한 사물이 아니다. 꽃 속에 나비가 깃들고 나비의 날개짓에 꽃향기가 묻어나는 ‘물화(物化)’의 경지를 체험한 장자의 ‘호랑나비 꿈’과 같은 이상향의 이미지가 작가 자신의 삶의 일부로 노래와 춤, 꽃과 나비의 존재로 깊숙이 자리하고 있기 때문이다. 사랑의 영혼을 지닌 존재의 존재자로서의 의미와 가치는 이러한 상호간의 특별한 관계인식으로부터 이루어지는데, 그렇지 못할 경우 우리 앞에 놓인 존재 또는 대상은 단지 하나의 공간을 차지하며 스쳐 지나가는 몸짓에 불과하다. 그러나 주체의 의식이 존재나 대상 속으로 스며들어 특별한 만남이 이루어질 때 존재 또는 대상은 스스로 문을 열고 자신의 의미와 본질을 드러내며 주체와 서로 소통하게 된다. 작가의 노래와 춤, 꽃과 나비로 상징되는 유토피아에 대한 인식은 이처럼 단순한 서정성을 뛰어넘어 자연의 질서와 변화 속에서 창조되는 어울림의 생명에너지이다. 이 감동적인 인식의 변화는 꽃과 나비라는 소재가 지닌 전통적인 상징성을 뛰어넘어 그 생명력의 근원인 이상적 세계에 대한 탐구로 자연스럽게 옮겨간다. 작가 김명옥은 유토피아의 세계를 그리는 작업 속에 자신의 삶으로부터 촉발되는 내면의 의식들을 투사시켜 드러내고자 한다. 이러한 내면적 성찰을 바탕으로 세속적인 은밀한 욕구들을 오랜 동안 걸러내고 응축시켜 유토피아의 이미지로 승화시켜 표출한 것이 근래 작품들이라고 할 수 있다.
작가 김명옥의 이번 작품들은 매우 특별하다. 기존의 채색화와 수묵화 작업과는 달리 새롭게 변모된 새로운 조형적 기법이 성공적으로 시도되고 있기 때문이다. <utopia>라는 제목의 일련의 연작들은 한지 바탕에 분채와 석채를 올려 화사하면서도 환상적인 분위기를 연출하고 있으며, 다양한 면 분할을 통한 공간구성을 구축하여 디자인적인 명료함과 현대적인 감각을 부각시키면서도 서양과 동양, 전통과 현대의 이미지를 유토피아의 추구라는 주제 속에 성공적으로 융합시키고 있다. 또 실크 바탕에 본염기법을 시도하여 화려한 색감을 극대화 하는 등 새로운 조형적 실험도 행하고 있어 앞으로의 작업방향에 기대를 갖게 한다.
근래 작품들의 구성은 서양악기가 등장하는 에덴의 이미지와 전통 국악기가 등장하는 신시의 이미지가 펼쳐지는 화면구성이 나타나다가 서양적 춤과 농악 등 전통춤의 이미지의 조합을 통해 융합과 소통의 춤사위로 노래하고 어울리는 몸짓의 유토피아로 종합되고 있다. 단군신화에서 환웅천왕이 홍익인간의 꿈을 실현하기 위하여 태백산 신단수 아래에서 펼쳤던 신시(神市)는 바로 인간과 자연이 한데 어울려 건강한 생명력을 표출하는 우리 민족공동체의 원형으로 전통춤과 십장생의 이미지와 어울리는 이상향이라고 할 수 있다. 작가 김명옥이 근래 진지하게 모색하며 담아내고 있는 이상향의 세계는 장자(莊子)의 유토피아인 ‘무하유지향(無何有之鄕)’이자 기독교의 낙원 에덴이며, 우리 민족이 오래도록 마음속에 간직해 온 천지인(天地人) 삼재(三才)가 한데 어우러져 춤추고 노래하는 대동세계(大同世界)로서의 신시(神市)와 서로 통하는 것이다. 특히 근래 작품에서 보여주고 있는 김명옥의 작품세계는 바로 대동세계의 주체인 인간의 몸짓과 마음의 창을 통해 자연과의 소통과 어울림을 노래하고 있는 유토피아라고 할 수 있다. 작가는 사랑과 영혼의 행복한 교감이 넘실대는 유토피아의 의미를 서양악기와 국악기의 선율 및 춤사위와 나비로 상징하여 표현하고 있는데, 나비효과의 파동이나 리듬을 암시하는 작가의 의도를 엿볼 수 있다.
작가 김명옥의 발랄하고 감각적인 조형적 실험에 대한 지평의 확대는 동양화의 현대적 변용의 모델을 보여주는 것으로 의미가 크다고 볼 수 있다. 근래의 작품들은 민화나 공필화로 대변되는 전통적 고정관념에서 벗어나 현대적 감각의 화사하고 명료한 색채로 환상적 분위기를 듬뿍 선사하고 있는데, 이 작품들은 작가가 꿈꾸고 노래하는 어울림의 몸짓을 통해 우리가 꿈꾸는 유토피아에서 손잡고 거닐며 함께 누릴 희망을 제시하고 있다.
작가 김명옥이 보여주고 있는 이번 작품들은 동양화의 전통에 바탕을 두면서도 새로운 감각을 요구하는 시대의 흐름에 따라 주체적 변화를 지향하며 모색해 온 열정의 산물이다. 전통의 틀 속에 안주하지 않고 늘 새로운 감각으로 미지의 여행을 꿈꾸는 작가 김명옥의 작가적 열정과 고집은 작가가 지녀야 할 소중한 덕목 가운데 하나이다. 겉으로 드러나는 꽃과 나비의 감각적인 향기나 아름다움이 아니라 그 내면에 감춰진 본질의 의미를 진솔하게 받아들이고 이해할 때 장자의 ‘물화’나 ‘호랑나비 꿈’처럼 대상과의 공감이 한층 깊어질 수 있다. ‘아는 만큼 보인다.’는 말이 있듯이 작가 김명옥이 꿈꾸는 유토피아의 노래에 귀 기울일 때 이를 통해 가슴을 울리는 감동도 맛볼 수 있을 것이다.
Body Movements of Harmony Dreaming and Singing the Utopia

Flower - the greatest creature of the God - is the truest and beautiful symphony of love and soul echoing with fragrance around the world with its life energy. Body movements of harmony with bees and butterflies dancing together along the tune performed with true fragrance of soul at the festival of flowers in full bloom on the Garden of Eden - that is the mirror of the heart of Artist Kim Myung Ok. It is because a Utopia - A Land of Nothing (無何有之鄕) alleged by Zhuangzi (莊子) - desired by us is opened right here. Gesture of co-existence in communication and harmony embracing each other with enchanted fragrance is really the Eden and the City of God (神市) as a vital space where true and warm soul and emotion draw their breaths. Artist Kim Myung Ok draws the festival spread in a mysterious utopia full of flower's fragrance into the space of win-win and harmony where the creatures share their loves in harmony. She sings acknowledgement of the life full of devotional love with pleasure just like a group dance of butterflies in the flower garden and motion us to smell the scent in our minds. Ultimate utopia to be supported by us is the Garden of Eden embracing everything as a space of co-existence. Of them, true and unpolluted nature represented by flowers and butterflies are said to be able to awaken our souls and emotions with small but big echo. This is the Utopia where the Artist Kim Myung Ok desires to live as such, and the feature of Eden full of fragrance where nature and human being respond each other with love.
Recent works of Kim Myung Ok show the fragrance of Utopia where true life represented by flower met by 'Flying Light' carrying the soul of love represented by butterfly happily, which is echoing like a symphony. Emotional wingbeat of butterfly to approach the heart of flower with emotion filled with the scent of soul is brilliant like the color of rainbow spouting the spectrum of love. A bunch of flowers for the butterfly falling in live like this is not an individual being as a plant but led to the space of utopia guiding the light of soul, that is, a wide open world of the Garden of Eden and the City of God. Flower generates fragrance just like embracing toward butterfly and gets into the rhythm freely like the flag fluttering in the air along the tune of heart. Like this, the world of utopia dreamt by the Artist is not the solitary world of Utopia where she is content with but is expressed with a gesture of harmony where human being with true spirits sing and dance along with flower and butterfly.
For the Artist Kim Myung Ok, flower and butterfly in the Eden are not just simple beings approaching as balminess or beauty.
It is because the image of utopia like Zhuangzi's 'Butterfly Dream’ or 'Transformation' (wuhua:物化) where butterfly approaches flower and flower fragrance is smeared with the wingbeat of butterfly is very much ingrained into the part of the life of the Artist herself as the existence of song/dance and flower/butterfly. Meaning and value of the being of the existence having the soul of love arise from the awareness of special relationship between each other like this. If not, the existence or subject placed before us is just a body movement sliding by occupying a space only. Nevertheless, when a special meeting is made with a sense of sovereignty smearing into the existence or subject, the existence or subject communicate with each other revealing their own meaning and nature by opening the door by themselves. The artist's awareness of the Utopia represented by song/dance and flower/butterfly is the vital energy of harmony created in the order and change of nature beyond a simple lyricism like this. Such emotional change in awareness is moving naturally toward the exploration toward the ideal world that is the origin of vital energy beyond the traditional symbolism carried by the materials such as flower and butterfly. Artist Kim Myung Ok intends to reveal by projection her inward consciousness moved from her life within her work drawing the world of utopia. It is her recent works that are sublimated and expressed into the image of utopia through filtering and condensation of secular and clandestine desire based on such inner introspection for a long time.
These works of the Artist Kim Myung Ok are extraordinary. Unlike the existing works in Oriental Painting and Korean Ink Brush Painting, she successfully attempts a formative technique that is newly modified. A series of pieces with the title of <utopia> perform a gorgeous and fantastic atmosphere with powder paint and stone powder on the Hanji (Korean paper). By establishing spatial construction through a partition of a variety of faces, she highlights perspicuity in terms of design and modern sense and also successfully combines the image of west/orient and tradition/modernity in the theme of pursuit of utopia. Furthermore, she attempts penetration printing technique on the silk base maximizing brilliant color sense as a new formative test, and such her movement brings our expectation about her work direction in future.
Her recent works show the picture spread by the images of the Eden with western instruments and the City of God (神市) with Korean traditional instruments, and are finally led to the utopia of gesture singing in harmony through dancing steps of combination and communication from combination of images of western dance and traditional dance such as farm music, etc. City of God (神市) which Han Ung Cheon Wang established under the Sindansu" (神檀樹, "Divine Betula") on the slope of Taebaek Mountain to realize the dream of Hongik Ingan in the myth of Dangun is the utopia well matched with the image of traditional dance and the ten traditional Symbols of Longevity as the original form of our ethnic community that expresses a healthy vital energy with human being and nature getting along well.
The world of utopia the Artist Kim Myung Ok recently expresses through earnest groping is ‘A Land of Nothing (無何有之鄕)’ that is the utopia of Zhuangzi (莊子), the Eden - the Paradise of Christianity, which opens into the City of God (神市) as the Big Big World (大同世界) where the three Elements (三才) such as Heaven, Earth, and Man (天地人) deeply kept in our people for a long time sing and dance all together. Especially, the world of Kim Myung Ok shown in her recent works is the utopia that sings communication and harmony with the nature through gesture and heart of human being who is the subject of Big Big World (大同世界). The artist expresses the meaning of utopia full of happy sympathy of love and soul by the tunes of western and Korean traditional instruments, dancing steps, and butterfly from which we can peep the intention of the artist suggesting the eave or rhythm of butterfly effect.
The artist's expanded horizon for vivacious and sensible formative test represents the model of modern variation in oriental painting, which is of significant meaning. Her recent works present a full of fantastic atmosphere with brilliant and clear colors in modern sense beyond traditional fixed idea represented by folk painting or meticulous techniques, which suggest a hope that we could enjoy in our dreamy utopia through the gesture of harmony where the artist dreams and sings.
These works shown by the Artist Kim Myung Ok are the by-products of passion explored for supporting independent change according to the stream of times requiring a new sense but based on the tradition of oriental paintings. Passion and stubbornness of Kim Myung Ok dreaming of unknown travel with new sense rather than settling in the frame of tradition is one of valued virtue to be carried by the artist. When one honestly accepts and understands the meaning of the nature hidden inside rather than sensible fragrance or beauty of flower and butterfly coming to the surface, the sympathy with the subject can be more deepened like ‘wuhua (物化)’ or ‘the Butterfly Dream’ of Zhuangzi. As it says ‘we can see as much as we know’, when we listen to the song of Utopia dreamt by the Artist Kim Myung Ok, we could also taste the emotion touching heart through this.
