'Park Ki-Soo Paris Exhibition'
"Pictures, soaked with paintings"
I am a photographer Park, Ki-soo working in Korea. I tend to portrait pictures in a pictorial way. This picturing method I use is an experimental one; it has never been used before in the field of photograph. In order to promulgate this experimental attempt, and to share what I have accomplished, I have come to Paris, France, after finishing my work in Manhattan, New York.
In order to present a single picture in a pictorial way, about 3,000 cuts of pieces are required. The method of this process includes two ways: photographing and mixing. It's as if painters draw a painting. Like artists mix paints, first I mix files and then mix picture images. In order to complete one result, millions of cuts are required, and then wasted. It takes a lot of time to finish one job. In order to reduce stress of cameras, I have used five cameras in turn.
My pictures are very abstract and unrealistic. However, within that unrealistic image, a realistic one vaguely appears.
My pictures also present fascination hidden in between fantastic and realistic image, which audiences find out and become amused.
My pictures are expressed as if it has been drawn with grass roots and loofah sponge mixed with paint, rather than brushes. In order to give a deeper life along with essential factors of nature, I have brought uncountable number of particles and put them into patterns. Sometimes I tried to make images as if they are drawn with oil paints or pastel, and sometimes I tried to present an expression?? as if they are drawn with watercolor paint, based on the characteristics of the subject. With the increase of its number, I tried to present contrast, texture, and depth of images, which turned out to be quite similar to an unconscious return instinct. It seems like everything I have created has been a rediscovery brought by digital cameras which can only be found in the flow of chronological changes.
Rather than stereotypical ones, my pictures are rough, and they tend to be crushed and destroyed. In that process, I hope a new form of past memories and experiences could emerge.
My pictures walk on fine wires which are called the borderline between paintings and pictures, the boundary between fantasy and reality, and the border between technology and sensitivity.
Photos are not taken. They are drawn.

"사진, 그림에 젖다"
한 장의 사진을 회화적으로 표현하기 위해서는 많게는 3천여 컷 이상의 사진이 필요로 하다. 그 과정의 방법에 있어서는 촬영의 방법과 믹싱의 방법 이렇게 두 가지 단계를 거쳐서 완성을 하게 된다. 그것은 마치 화가들이 그림을 그리는 방법과도 같다. 화가들이 물감을 섞듯이 1차적으로 파일을 믹싱하고 2차적으로는 사진 이미지를 믹싱하게 된다. 한 장의 결과를 얻기 위해서는 수십만에서 수백만 컷이 필요로 하다. 그리고 버려진다. 그렇게 버려진 만큼 긴 시간도 함께 소요가 되었다. 카메라의 열화도와 피로를 줄이기 위해서 다섯 대를 번갈아가며 촬영을 하였다.
나의 사진은 추상적이고 비현실적이다. 그러나 그 비현실적인 이미지 속에서 희미하게 현실적 이미지가 나타난다.
환상적 이미지와 현실적 이미지의 경계에서 관객에게 아름다움과 함께 소소한 발견의 재미도 더불어 선사하고 있다.
나의 사진은 정형화된 사진보다는 거칠고 뭉개어지고 파괴되면서 과거의 기억과 경험이 곧 새롭게 탄생하기를 기대하고 있다.
나의 사진은 그림과 사진의 경계. 환상과 현실의 경계 그리고 기술과 감성의 경계에서 흥미로운 줄타기를 하고 있다.
