류시숙의 작업세계
함박웃음, 그 환희의 붓질
류시숙 작가의 그림은 곱다. 투명한 물빛 바탕에 피어난 꽃그림이 수채화 같다. 그가 피운 꽃들은 협화음을 이루며 하나같이 활짝 웃는다.
동서고금(東西古今)을 통틀어 꽃은 아름다움의 대명사로 여겨져 왔다. 밤낮의 주기나 계절을 표시하고 빛깔과 모양, 향기는 관조의 대상이 된다. 인류는 신앙과 장식뿐만 아니라 정서적 상징물로서 꽃이 지닌 한시적 아름다움을 그림으로써 지속적 향유를 가능케 했다. 미술사에서도 비중 있는 소재로 자리를 굳힌 지 오래다. 류시숙은 이러한 꽃을 작업의 주요 모티브로 삼아온 작가다.
주지했듯이 미술사에서 꽃은 더 이상 신선한 소재가 아니다. 그러나 같은 종류의 꽃그림이라도 품고 있는 의미나 해석은 각기 다르다. 류시숙 작가의 꽃이 지닌 차별화는 아름다움의 의미를 넘는다. 단토(Arthur Coleman Danto 1924~1913)는 예술의 종말과 관련한 철학적 물음에서 '예술은 본질적으로 무엇인가'를 묻는 것은 적절치 못하다고 했다. 그보다 예술작품과 예술작품이 아닌 것의 차이에 대해서 질문한다. 단토의 질문을 빌린다면 류시숙작가의 꽃그림에도 현대미술에서 요구되는 열린 시각과 접근이 필요할 것 같다. 이것은 무엇인가에 대한 질문보다 작품에 투영된 심상에 더 주목하게 한다.
류작가는 미술대학 졸업(1982년) 후 1992년부터 현재(2014년)까지 수차례의 크고 작은 전시회를 거치며 화업(畵業)을 이어왔다. 그의 작가로서의 긴 여정에는 가족이 동행했다. 어느 작가에게나 가정생활과 작업의 병행에는 고락(苦樂)이 동반된다. 끓어오르는 작업 열정을 오롯이 표출하지 못할 때의 좌절과 사랑하는 가족을 보듬으며 작업할 수 있을 때의 행복, 그는 이 상반의 조합을 숙명이라 회상한다. 평범한 일상의 반복과 예술적 열망을 병존시켜온 그의 숙명은 주어진 삶에 충실하며 응축된 내면은 예술로 승화시키는 것이었다. 그의 이러한 삶은 하얀 캔버스위에 다양한 꽃으로 기록된다.
바탕에 겹겹이 쌓아올린 아크릴 물감의 엷은 붓 자국이 투명한 듯 탄탄하다. 반복된 붓질 틈사이로 꽃들이 피어난다. 이름 모를 들꽃에서부터 과꽃, 나팔꽃, 늘어진 능소화까지 갖가지 꽃들은 하나같이 만개했다. 그에게 만개한 꽃은 예술적 열망의 단초이자 대변체로 자리한다. 때로는 종교적 믿음과 간절한 기도로 피워 올린 꽃, 삶의 질곡을 환희로 승화시킨 꽃이다. 어둠을 빛으로 변환시킨 꽃이자 지난했던 삶조차 기쁨으로 구현한 꽃이기도 하다. 한편 주어진 현실의 책무를 곰삭히고 발효시켜 피워 올린 꽃이면서 이 모두를 벗고 인간이자 여자로서의 단출한 소망을 담은 꽃인지도 모르겠다.
그가 만개한 꽃을 그리는 이유도 남다르다. 낙화를 앞둔 만개화(滿開花)가 아닌 절정에 다다른 만개화다. 때문인지 꽃을 품은 그의 화면은 어머니의 숨결처럼 부드럽고도 은은하다. 스미듯 드러난 형상들이 거친 세상을 흡수한다. 이러한 작업은 작가이기 전에 어머니였던 그에게 내재되었던 긍정적 에너지의 수렴과 발산이라 봄이 옳다. 이렇듯 작가는 활짝 핀 꽃을 통해 삶의 단면들을 긍정과 밝음으로 제시하고 있다. 작가는 한마디로 단정내릴 수 없는 다채로운 삶의 곡절들을 꽃이라는 조형언어에 대입시킨 것이다.

Seesook Ryu's World of Art Works
Toothy grin from ear to ear and joy of brush strokes
Artist Ryu's art works evoke images of a young, recently married woman. Her watercolor paintings show flowers blooming in transparent water, all smiling in harmony.
Throughout human history in both the East and West, flowers have been considered synonymous with beauty. Special flowers mark the beginning of every season as well as the start of the lunar calendar, and their hues, shapes, and fragrances are all subject to contemplation. Flowers are held as symbols of faith and emotion by humans, which strive to immortalize their beauty through drawings. Flowers have become entrenched as motifs for art works such as drawings and paintings throughout history.
Flowers are a widely drawn material in art history. However, every artist interprets, draws, and views flowers differently. Ryu's interpretation of flowers goes beyond simply beauty. Arthur Coleman Danto (1924 ~ 1913) criticized the question 'What is art essentially?' as inappropriate and questioned differences between art works and non-art works. According Danto's meditation, an open perspective and approach towards contemporary arts is needed to discuss the flower art works of Ryu. Danto's meditation also urges us to find images that reflect her spiritual world projected in her paintings.
After graduation in 1982 from the college of fine arts, Ryu has continued to build her career as an artist with many exhibitions. Her long journey as an artist has been accompanied by her family. Any artist with a family experiences both happiness and difficulties in terms of balancing family life. In retrospect, a conflict arising from incompatibilities, taking care of family members, and frustration is inevitable. Ryu translates her inner agony to art by painting flowers on a white canvas.
Transparent and solid touches of the brush create stacked layers of acrylic pigments. Flowers are blooming between repeated strokes or touches of the brush. From unknown wild flowers to asters, morning glories, and trumpet creepers, all kinds of flowers have bloomed. To Ryu, blooming flowers are clues of her artistic aspirations represent a conversion of the sorrows of life to joy, just like an earnest prayer. Flowers transform darkness to light, convert her difficulties to joy, translate her ordinary reality to an aesthetic life, and bear her simple wishes as a woman.
Ryu has a special reason for drawing fully bloomed flowers. Her flowers are always in peak bloom, which means that her paintings are smooth and warm like a mother's breath. Shapes are soaking in a wild and rough world. Her works are the result of divergence and convergence of positive energies, which she holds as a mother. Ryu portrays the positive side of life through bloomed flowers. She translates the indescribable difficulties and easiness of life into an aesthetic format.
In recent years, the flowers in her paintings have been lower in saturation and have become more of a background. Korean Hahoe masks are engraved on a canvas with flowers as the background. Newly drawn Korean Hahoe masks also show a smile. Hahoe masks having been used in Hahoe dancing performances in Andong and Ryu recently began to reproduce them on canvas. Ryu has changed her material from bloomed flowers to Hahoe masks, but her positive images have remained. As Hahoe mask's original meaning is one of sarcasm or humor, Ryu has taken on another challenge. This change, which can be thought of as abnormal, is a manifestation of her potential life energy. Art observers should wait to see how Ryu will overcome these difficulties and maintain balance and flexibility using these new materials. I expect she will widen her aesthetic horizon and sense throughout her entire art work process by projecting purpose into her art work.
