문명의 기억 - 감성과 이성의 변주(變奏)
박동수의 작품은 원색 계통의 물감을 흘려 뿌려 뒤덮은 화면 위에 흰 안료를 전체적으로 두께 있게 입힌 후, 그 다음에 여러 가지 이미지를 선과 면으로 긁어내는 스크레이핑(scraping) 기법을 사용한다. 아래에 있는 원색의 물감 층은 직관, 본능, 무의식, 꿈 등의 역동적 영역이며, 위를 덮은 흰 안료 층은 현실, 이성, 개념 등의 의식적 영역이다. 그의 스크레이핑 기법은 이 두 영역 사이에 작용하는 긴장과 이완의 관계를 역동적으로 매개하는 것이며, 그 가운데 조화롭고 생동적인 이미지를 표현해 내는 것이다.
즉 긁어내어 드러난 이미지들은 변증법적 발전을 거친 또 하나의 이른바 ‘순수하게 정제되고 집약된 역동성’을 느끼게 해 준다. 유명한 미술사가인 빈켈만이 말한 ‘고귀한 단순과 고요한 위대’에 비견된다. 실제 그의 작품들을 조금 떨어져서 거리를 두고 보면, 화면 전체를 가득 채운 선들은 전면균질회화(All Over Painting)를 이루면서 동양적 사유가 깃든 고요한 역동성을 느낄 수 있다.
그의 작품세계는 크게 두 가지 범주로 나눌 수 있는데 하나는 인류 문명과 관련된 사물 또는 정신적 이미지를 작품화 한 것이고, 다른 하나는 인류 문명의 시원 이래 끊임없이 천변만화하는 자연 풍경의 이미지를 사의적(寫意適)으로 표현한 것들이다. 즉 이집트 히에로글리프를 시작으로 마야문명의 인체 형상에 기초한 마야문자들과 신화적 이미지들, 우리나라 고대 벽화에 나타나는 많은 이미지를 표현한 작품들이 있다. 그리고 한편 자연의 풍경 이미지들을 표현한 강산무진 연작, 구체적 형상을 표현한 연꽃, 목련, 장미 소재의 작품들이 있다.
결국 이 모든 작품들은 캔버스 아래층에 있는 원색 물감의 감각적 역동성과 그 위를 덮은 흰색 층을 긁어내어 새긴 직관적 사유의 여러 이미지들이 조화를 이루어 그의 작품 세계를 형성하고 있는 것이다.

Memory of Civilization - Variation between Sensibility and Reason
His art work uses the method of dripping colorful paint on the canvas and covering it with white plaster of mixed media. After that, he scrapes the white surface to express various images. The under layer of the colorful paint is the dynamic area that signifies intuition, instinct, unconsciousness and dream. The upper surface layer of white plaser is the controlling area that signifies reality, reason, concept and consciousness. His method of scraping intermediates between tension and relaxation of the two areas. In this process he expresses the various images of harmony and vitality.
Those images make us feel 'vitality purified and integrated' through a process of dialectical development. It can be compared to ‘noble simplicity and quiet grandeur' that is esthetical term of Johann J. Winckelmann, the art historian. Actually if you take a look at Mr. Park's art works from a little distance it makes you feel the quiet vitality of oriental meditation by his all over painting of numerous lines that covers whole surface of the canvas.
His art works are devided into two categories. One consists of the images of human civilization. The other consists of the images of the natural landscape that always has been changing since the beginning of the human civilization. The first one includes the images of the Egytion hieroglyph, the Mayan letter and mythical images that is based on the shapes of human body in Mayan civilization and the numerous images of the mural paintings in ancient Korean kingdoms etc. The second one includes the series of never ending landscapes in mind and the realistic images such as lotus flower, magnolia flower, rose etc.
As a result all these things form his art world of 'variation of sensiblity and reason' which is harmonized by the two factors. One is the sensuous vitality of colorful paint that lies under the surface as a lower basis. The other is the meditative image which get shown by scraping the white cover.

미술학 박사인 박동수 선생은 이집트 마야문명 인체 형상에 기초한 문자들과 신화적 이미지들, 우리나라 고대 벽화에 나타나는 많은 이미지를 이용해 작품을 표현하고 있다. 또 자신만의 스크레이핑 기법으로 구체적 형상을 표현한 연꽃, 목련, 장미 소재의 작품들과 끊임없이 천변만화 하는 자연 풍경의 이미지를 표현해 내는 독특한 작품세계를 볼 수 있다.
박동수 작가의 작품은 원색 계통의 물감을 뿌린 캔버스 위에 흰 안료를 전체적으로 두껍게 입힌 후, 여러 가지 이미지를 선과 면으로 긁어내는 스크레이핑(scraping) 기법을 사용한다. 작가는 아래에 있는 원색의 물감 층은 직관, 본능, 무의식, 꿈 등의 역동적 영역이라고 표현하였고, 위를 덮은 흰 안료 층은 현실, 이성, 개념 등의 의식적 영역이라고 표현을 하였다. 작품들은 캔버스 아래층에 있는 원색 물감의 감각적 역동성과 그 위를 덮은 흰색 층을 긁어내어 사유작용을 거치지 않고 대상을 직접적으로 만들어 내는 이미지들이 조화를 이루어 박동수 작가의 작품세계를 형성하고 있다. 실제 그의 작품들을 조금 떨어져서 거리를 두고 보면, 화면 전체를 가득 채운 선들은 구도를 설정하지 않고 전체를 화면 전체를 동일한 방법으로, 같은 강도로 칠한 것을 볼 수 있다. 그러한 표현들이 조화롭고 생동적인 이미지를 표현해 내는 것이다.
이번 전시에서는 동양적 사유가 깃든 고요한 역동성을 느낄 수 있는 박동수 선생의 신작 20여 점을 볼 수 있다.
박동수 선생은 개인전 10회 및 단체전 300 여회가 넘는 초대전 및 단체전 전시경력이 있으며, 한국․네덜란드 현대작가전, 한․인도 국제미술교류전, MBC 미국개국기념 한국미술대표작가전,
경주세계문화엑스포 한국현대미술100인초대전 등 많은 전시에 참여하였다. 홍익대, 인천대, 서울산업대 외래교수를 하셨고, 한국미술협회 이사 및 서양화1분과 부위원장 ,경기도미술협회 수석부지회장, 의왕미술협회장 외에도 많은 곳을 역임했으며 현재 의왕미협 자문위원, 아트프라이스 지역편집장으로 있다.
