황찬수 그림 - 색채의 향연

황찬수의 그림은 색채의 향연이다. 다양한 색채는 자연스런 붓놀림에 실려 시시각각 변화하는 톤을 보여주며 화면 전체에 펼쳐진다. 그가 색채를 구사함에서도 깊이 감을 찾는 것은 단순한 색채의 가시적 효과만을 위한 것이 아닌 정신적 차원에서 접근할 일이다. 또한 여러 색채가 조합하여 한 tone을 형성함으로써 보여지는 화면도 화면이지만, 그 화면 위에서 이루어지는 정연한 붓질 행위는 시간적 의미를 내포하는 음악적 연주라고 하는 것이 적당할 것이다.
그에겐 그림의 대상이 구체적인 사물이나 사건이 아니다. 단지 그림의 동기가 되는 조형충동이 일어나는 우연적 만남 즉, 작가가 만난 어느 시점에서의 정황이 출발점이 된다. 즉흥적이고 격정적일 수 있는 현장에서의 일차적 심리상태는 시간을 여과하며 성찰의 과정을 거쳐 보다 정제되어 나타나게 된다고 볼 수 있다. 그의 그림은 만남의 정황에 대한 자신의 심적 반응을 담아내는 것이다. 순수한 감성적 반응이며 타고난 음악적 감흥에 의한 연주를 이루는 것이다.
연주~! 그러나 그는 의도적으로 만들어 가는 형식이라는 것을 경계한다. 일반적으로 현대회화에서 주제와 형식이 작가 개인별로 뚜렷하게 부각된 점에서 비교하여 보면 황찬수는 의도적으로 이를 의식적으로 벗어나려고 애써 왔다. 그것은 일관적 주제와 틀이 가져올 수 있는 상투적 태도를 경계한 것일까? 또는 자연히 생성된 형식이라 할지라도 자신의 자유로운 발상을 구속할 수 있는 얽매임의 관계가 더 많이 부담스러운 것으로 보여 진 것 같다.
황찬수는 끝없는 자유를 갈망하고 있고 작가의 활동은 자유로워야한다고 확신하고 있는 그에겐 반복되는 주제도 정형화하는 형식도 늘 경계의 대상이었을 게다.
그러나 우리는 태어나면서 체질을 타고 난다. 취향이 그러하며 음색과 성격, 태도에서 남들과 다른 특징을 표출하기 마련이다. 그러하다보니 그에게도 그다운 체취가 묻어나는 그림이 형성된다. 이것이 필자가 말하려는 황찬수의 ‘결’ 그림이다. 이 결이란 바람결, 물결, 숨결, 마음결 에서의 결이다. 섬세하게 다가가야만 감지될 수 있는 것으로 시각적 대상이 아닌 오감을 통해 느낄 수 있는 무형의 대상이다. 이 결은 아주 근본적인 지점에 이어지는 개념이라고 설정한다면, 어느 가시적, 가촉적 대상을 두고 하는 예술행위가 아닌 황찬수의 경우에 해당하는 개념이라고 할 수 있다.
이 또한 ‘만남의 흔적’이라고 할 수도 있을 것이다. ‘어느 날, 어디’ 라는 구체적인 단서는 별 의미가 없을 것이다. 다만 그 흐름 속에서 떠낸 듯한 한 단편은 과거의 기억이면서 보는 시점에서의 현재, 그리고 미래의 어느 한 시점의 이야기도 될 수 있다. 이러한 개연성은 사소한 이슈나 일상적 담론, 사회적 관점에서의 주제가 아니며, 보다 보편적 감성의 지평에서 이루어지는 작업에서 가능한 개념이다. 그리하여 그의 그림은 어디에서 출발하고 어디에서가 끝인지 묻기 보다는 영겁의 시간 속에서의 결을 개인적 일상 속에서 무수한 만남을 통하여 쌓아가고 있는 것이다.

The painting of artist Chansoo Hwang is the feast of colors. Various colors upon liberal brush stroke show ever-changing tones whole over the canvas. He seeks the depth of color as well. This should be closely looked from mental level which is not just for visible effects of simple colors. Also showing picture as forming certain tone by various color combining and brush stroke action in good order on painting can be properly illustrated as musical performance involving the mean of time.
For him, the object of painting is not a thing or a matter. Merely the coincidence point where formative compulsions happen which is the motive of painting, in other words, the circumstance of certain point of view what the artist meets is the starting point. It is ruminating private work. Therefore primary mental state on site which rather impromptu and passionate passes through time and introspection process then is finally presented after refined. His painting serves his own mental response about accidental meeting. It is pure emotional reaction and is making performance by musical inspiration.
Performance~! He does excercise vigilance the form which is made intentionally. Compare to modern painting which is distinctly magnified upon object and form by each artist, Chansoo Hwang has been trying to free from it with intention consciously. Is this that he lookout conventional attitude which is brought from consistent subject and outline? Or even though it is a form naturally generated, it seems like he thought the bound-relationship which might restrict liberal idea is much burden to him。
Chansoo Hwang is always seeking endless free. He is certain about that artist activity should be very free. So, it is sure that for him, repeat subject and standardized formality have been always alert target.
However, we were all born with own constitution. Taste is one of example, also in tone, personality and attitude, characteristics different from others are expressed. Like that, for him also, paintings with his presence are formed. This is what I would like to mention, 'Grain' painting of Chansoo Hwang. This grain is wind, water, breathing and heart grain. This is more like immaterial thing which can be felt by five senses. It is not a visual object but when you closely reach with delicacy then you can feel. If we put this grain as a concept which continues to fundamental some point, this is not an artistic action with visible or touchable object but belongs to the concept of Chansoo Hwang's case.
This also can be said as ''the trace of encounter''. Concrete clues like ''what day, where'' have no more meaning. But one fragment seems like ladled from the flow can be the memory of past, the present of seeing view and certain point of the future. This probability is not a trivial issue nor ordinary discourse even not a subject of social perspective. This is the concept which is possible more on the field of sensitivity. So that, his painting tells us that we pile up grains of eternity time in individual life through countless encounters rather than asking where it starts and ends.
