이 전시회는 런던에서 20년째 창작활동을 해오는 한국 출신의 미술가 조 프란체스카(Francesca Cho)를 초대하여 그의 최근 회화 연작을 소개하고 엄정한 유럽의 미술 환경 속에서 한국인 특유의 자생력과 독창성을 인정받은 그의 예술적 성취를 조명하기 위해 기획되었습니다.
개인으로서의 미술가가 실험해온 고통을 밑천으로 제시된 평온한 한 점의 그림, 이것이 바로 조 프란체스카가 냉혹한 유럽의 미술계에서 스스로 견디고 개척해온 지극히 한국적인 방식입니다. 짙어가는 가을 모처럼 맞이하는 조 프란체스카의 예술적 힐링에 여러분을 초대합니다.

『침묵을 낳는 소리
조 프란체스카의 예술적 갈망과 고백』
나는 그 날 저녁 웨스트민스터의 한 공간에서 현대미술의 첨예한 진화론적 시각의 똬리를 튼 채 조 프란체스카의 퍼포먼스와 그의 매체를 온전히 받아들이지 못 했음을 고백한다. 이제 나의 자리에서 내가 본 것들에 관해 어느 정도 겨우 말할 수 있게 된 듯하다. 매체의 판독을 교란하는 기능적 용도의 환경 속에 놓인 그의 회화에 대해 나는 현대미술의 발전적 맥락의 후퇴를 염려했다. 하지만 그의 회화는 한국의 채색화의 전 통에서 유래하는 칠의 특질을 통해, 주변과 대비되는 캔버스의 시각적 당당함을 갖는 동시에 표면의 심리적 변화들을 통합함으로써 그 맥락을 오히려 더 풍성하고 새롭게 하는 것으로 생각된다.
현대미술은 신상이 있던 곳에 그것을 물리고 대신 알 수 없는 것을 둠으로써 생겨났다고들 한다. 이 말은 또한 미술의 끝을 이야기할 때 줄 곧 등장하고 특히 오늘날 미술의 과잉된 물질만능을 지적할 때 줄 곧 인용된다. 스스로의 헌신과 희생을 통해 구현하는 퍼포먼스, 철저한 자기 부정의 재로 그린 회화, 관람자를 향해 끊임 없이 기다리는 포맷으로 구성된 설치물, 이렇게 조 프란체스카 매체의 특징들이 파악된다. 이 특징들은 얼핏 일말의 수동성으로 종합되어 보일 것이다. 오늘날 매체가 자극적으로 호소하고 또 그러한 전략이 넘쳐나는 것에 비해 그의 태도는 지극히 수동적이다. 하지만 그 가 제시하는 매체의 암시와 태도는 오히려 현대미술의 발전적 맥락에서 놓쳐버린 중요한 것들을 회복하는 것으로 보인다. 그래서 나는 그의 미술이 신성한 곳에 무엇을 두어야 할지 관람자에게 묻는다.

『Sound into Silence
Francesca Cho’s Media Longing for Confession』
I have to confess that I did not enjoy all of Francesca Cho’s show at an interior of the Mayfair library that evening, measuring her works with the strict views of the modern art’s development. I worried about her paintings retrogressing from the development in the functional environment. Her painting, however, is comprehended to integrate the visual solidity and the psychological varieties with the painterly quality derived from traditional Korean colour. Rather, her painting makes the developing context renewed. characteristics of her media are summarized as the performance realized by self-sacrifice, the painting depicted with ash by self-abnegation and the installation formatted by enduring waiting for a spectator. At a glance, these might be more passive than most visual media of nowadays teasingly appeals for something attractive. Rather, her media’s features seem to revive a significant part lost of the modern art of development. So I think her art implies what we should put into the sacred place.

주요연혁 및 스펀서쉽 | 조 프란체스카는 런던동대학교에서 판화와 순수미술전공으로 학사를하고 첼시 예술디자인 런던 예술대학대학원과 골드스미스 런던대학 대학원에서 순수미술석사를 했고 네델란드 어워즈, 조페밀리 스칼라쉽 및 레지던시, 이스트 햄 메모리얼 호스피털, 런던 한국문화원 등에서 선정 작가 및 수상을 하였으며 지금은 런던과 프랑스남부 (프로방스)에 있는 작업실을 오가며 유럽을 기반으로 창작발표에 여념이없으며 현재 영국 삼성유럽본사에서 초빙강연 활동을 하고있다.
