작가가 다루는 사각형의 딱지와 세일러복이란 두 이미지, 상징은 다르면서도 사실은 동질의 것으로 다가온다. 이 두 상징은 표면에 돌올하게 부풀어 올라 묘한 환영감을 불어 일으킨다.작가는 천으로 원피스를 직접 제작하여 화면에 부착하기도 하며, 세일러복 이미지는 흰 바탕면에 슬그머니 부조적으로 올라가 있다. 그것은 부드럽게 촉각성을 자극한다. 아울러 외곽선은 그림자와 합께 은은하게 흔들리는 실루엣을 동반하면서 아득하고 아련한, 명료하지 않고 조금씩 지워지거나 사라지는 듯한 느낌을 자아낸다. 기억이나 회상이란 사실 그런 것이다. 그것은 명료성에 저항한다. 흔들리고 부유한다. 한때 존재 했었지만 지금은 부재한, 그러나 없다고 말하기 어려운 기이한 시간대의 이미지다. 그것이 기억이다. 이 세일러복은 아마 작가의 유년시절을 회상하는 매개일 것이다. 옷이란 한때 내 몸을 감싸고 있었던 연장된 신체이자 취향, 기호, 신분,정체성 등을 동반하는 기호이자 그 옷과 함께 했었던 모든 사연들을 간직한 매개다. 따라서 유년의 옷, 어느 한 때 내가 입었던 옷이란 그 한 시절 나의 모든 것을 함축하는 핵심적 오브제다. 앨범이 간직한 그 시절의 사진 속에 내가 입었던 옷이란 무엇일까? 작가에게 이 뒷면의 세일러복이란 유니폼, 교복은 무엇이었을까? 앞면에 비해 뒷면은 보다 더 많은 사연을 품고 있어 보이고 정면보다 더 많은 말을 하고 있다. 소녀의 성적 정체성과 함께 그 옷이 부여 했던 금기와 질서, 규범 그리고 은밀히 그로부터의 일탈을 꿈꾸던 시절의 사연들이 그 교복위로 넘나들었을 것이다. 교복, 유니폼이란 그렇게 금기와 위반의 욕망 사이에 있다. 작가는 자신의 내밀한 사연, 아득한 시간의 흔적, 그리고 형상화될 수 없고 가시적 존재가 되지 못하는 막막한 것들을 사각형의 딱지형태와 세일러복이미지를 통해 보여주고 있는 셈이다. 이렇듯 작가의 작업은 도상적 연출을 통해 사적인 이야기를 구성하고 그리기와 만들기, 회화와 조각, 공예를 넘나들면서 화려한 매체연출과 집요한 노동을 통해 지난 시절을 은유화 네고 있다.
Remembering Absent Memories
Two images worked by the artist, which are quadrangular box-type label and sailor suit, stand for different symbols but represent the same. Those two symbols thickly on the surface causing strange illusion. She usually enjoys to make clothes by needlework for herself this interest in the clothes into special image in her works. Sailor suit image softly comes on the white base in relief. It tenderly touches tactile sensation. Outlines accompany with silhouette that is softly-wobbling with its shadow, seeming to be far, dim, unclear, blurring or disappearing little by little. Those are all for memory or recollection, in fact. They are against clarity. They shake and float. It is the image of weird time which existed ones but is absent now, while we can hardly say that it does nor exist. It is memory. This sailor suit may be a medium to recollect the artist’s childhood. Clothes are an extended body which once wrapped my body, a symbol to accompany my taste, favor, status, and identity, and a medium containing every stories with them. Therefore, childhood clothes which I wore during a certain period of my lifetime, is an essential object to contain everything of that times. What would be the clothes I wore in the photo stored in an album? What would this school uniform sailor suit on the back mean for the artist? Back side seems to bear more stories than front one, and talks more. Along with the girl’s sexual identity, taboo, order, regulation, and story of time when she dreamt of departure from those, would come in and out of that school uniform. School uniform is between the desire of taboo and violation like that.
