전시 기획 의도
송은 아트스페이스는 2013년 해외작가 개인전으로 영국작가 채프만 형제(Jake and Dinos Chapman)의 개인전을 국내에서 처음으로 선보입니다.
송은 아트스페이스는 국제무대에서 활발히 활동하고 있으나 아직 국내에서 심도 있게 다루어지지 않은 역량 있는 해외의 작가들을 정기적으로 소개하고 있습니다. 제이크와 디노스 채프만 형제는 신랄한 재치와 에너지로 오늘날 우리가 마주하는 정치, 종교, 도덕성을 검증하기 위해 인습타파적인 조각과 판화 및 설치작업을 하는 영국 출신의 작가입니다. 이들의 작업은 전쟁, 대량 학살, 섹스, 죽음과 소비지상주의에 대한 주제를 다루고 있습니다.
지난 20년간에 걸쳐 현대미술에 다양하고도 독창적인 시각을 기여한 채프만 형제의 일련의 주요 작업들을 선보이는 자리로, 그간 국내에서 접하지 못했던 이들의 작품을 심도 있게 감상하는 자리가 될 것입니다.
매년 진행되는 해외작가 개인전은 국제무대에서 주목 받는 외국 작가들의 대표작 및 신작을 소개함으로써 국내 전시문화에 활력을 불어넣는 한편, 관람객에게 쉽게 접할 수 없던 이들의 작품세계를 가까이서 감상할 수 있는 기회를 제공하고자 기획되었습니다.

채프만 형제 : The Sleep of Reason
채프만 형제(Jake and Dinos Chapman)는 yBa(young British artists) 출신 작가로, 오늘날 전세계적으로 큰 주목을 받아온 작가 중의 하나이다. 1990년 영국 왕립 예술학교(Royal College of Art)를 졸업한 이래 공동 작업을 해온 이들 형제는 프란시스코 고야의 <전쟁의 참상>과 같은 미술사적 아이콘뿐만 아니라 맥도날드의 로날드 캐릭터와 같은 대중적인 아이콘에 이르기까지 다양한 사회적 터부에 대해 탐구해왔다.
이번 전시에는 공동 예술 사업체인 RS&A London의 의뢰로 만들어진 Chess Set (2003), 고야의 오리지널 에칭 작품을 재해석 하여 9.5kg의 순은으로 제작한 The Same Thing But Silver (2007), 잠자리에서 읽는 동화책 형식으로 만들어진 Bedtime Tales for Sleepless Nights (2010)의 에칭 삽화와 텍스트, 또한 전쟁의 참혹함을 적나라하게 보여주어 이들 형제를 스타작가로 만들었던 Hell (1999)의 맥락을 잇는 설치작품인 Unhappy Feet (2010), No Woman No Cry (2009) 등 2002년부터 현재에 이르기까지 채프만 형제의 작품 세계 전반을 아우르는 작품들이 전시될 예정이다.
또한 채프만 형제의 신작 페인팅 작품 5점이 송은 아트스페이스에서 최초로 공개된다.

채프만 형제는 다양한 재료와 작업 방식, 주제를 통해 인간 존재와 도덕적 행위에 대한 쟁점들을 지속적으로 다루어왔다. 이들의 작업은 때로 지나치리만큼 불쾌하거나 천박해 보이는 표현들로 인해 비난을 받기도 하지만 이에 굴하지 않고 다루기 까다로운 주제들을 꾸준히 탐구하고 있다. Unhappy Feet, No Woman No Cry와 같이 인간이 수용할 수 있는 잔혹함의 범위에 대해 다루거나 유년기의 순수함과 성(sexuality)을 다룬 Bedtime Tales for Sleepless Nights를 비롯해 이들 형제는 사회에서 예술가가 갖는 의미와 예술이 해야 할 역할 그리고 작품 제작을 위한 협업의 역할에 이르기까지 다양한 문제의식을 다루어 왔다. 유머 또한 이들의 작업에 있어 중요한 요소의 하나로, 이는 1700년대 영국의 풍자가들, 프레데릭 니체와 조르주 바타유 등과 같은 20세기 철학사조와도 맥을 같이 한다. 애니메이션 영화 ‘해피 피트’와 같이 잘 알려진 대중 문화를 고문이나 잔혹 행위와 결합시킨 것은 눈에 뻔히 보이는 방식 같지만, 작품 전반을 통해 보여지는 이러한 기법들은 어린 아이의 천진함과 성인의 합리적인 사고에 대한 우리 이해를 재검토하기 위한 장치로 사용된 것이었다.

19세기 초 스페인 미술을 대표하는 프란시스코 고야는 채프만 형제에게 매우 중요한 영향을 끼친 작가로, 이들의 작품에서 고야의 영향이 매우 직접적으로 나타나거나, 소재나 주제 전반을 통해 보여지기도 한다. 이번 전시의 제목 또한 고야의 대표적인 에칭 작품 중 하나인 The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters (1797-1799)에서 따온 것으로, 오늘날 우리가 알고 있는 ‘이성’의 개념이 태동하고, ‘아동기’와 ‘성인기’의 개념이 비로소 정립되던 당시의 역사 속으로 우리를 안내하는 통로가 된다. 자신의 작품 제목 The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters (이성이 잠들면 괴물이 깨어난다)와 같이 궁극적으로 이성과 상상 사이에서 태어난 균형 잡힌 예술을 추구하고자 했던 고야는 역사적으로 근대 인본주의적 감성의 전형으로 정의되어 왔다. 채프만 형제는 고야가 다루었던 주요한 주제들을 다루면서 그의 작품을 자신들의 작업에 사용함으로써, 같은 주제에 대해 더 모호하면서도 복합적이고 보편적으로 표현해낸다. 고야의 가치를 재평가하고 이를 통해 우리 시대의 도덕적 관심사를 이끌어 내는 것은 이들 형제의 작업에 있어 핵심을 차지한다. 채프만 형제 작업을 이해하기 위해 제이크 채프만이 한 말을 단순히 인용하자면 다음과 같다. “계몽은 이성을 맹신하게 만들었지만 고야는 그렇게 하지 않았고 우리도 이성에 치우친 방식을 취하지 않는다.”

이번 전시는 지난 20여년 동안 현대미술계에 주요한 영향을 미쳐온 채프만 형제의 작업 전반을 선보이는 동시에 고야와 채프만 형제 모두가 다루고 있는, 그들 작품세계에 있어 주요한 주제들에 대한 복합적인 이해를 돕는 자리가 될 것이다.
제이크 채프만, 디노스 채프만 형제가 모두 한국에서의 첫 개인전의 기자간담회와 전시 오프닝, 아티스트 토크 프로그램 참석을 위해 방한할 예정이며, 이를 통해 국내 관람객과 미술 관계자들이 인간의 본성에 대해 이들이 던지는 질문들에 대해 재고할 수 있는 기회가 되기를 기대한다.
