도스 프로젝트…그  첫 번째 전시

김지은과 조미영은 도스 프로젝트를 통해 두 작가가 세계의 각 도시와 연계된 두 작가의 감성, 한국적인 문화, 현대 한국 시각예술을 세계에 알릴 수 있는 예술문화계의 한류로서 전시를 기획한다. 이 프로젝트는 이번 스페인전을 시작으로 프로젝트가 진행되는 도시와 연계된 주제를 토대로 기획 진행된다.

‘도스 프로젝트’의 ‘둘’이란 하나와 다른 하나가 만나 조화를 이루는 것을 의미한다. 도스 프로젝트는 트렌드에 편승하는 일군의 작가들과 달리 한국화의 전통을 따르면서도 그것을 자신의 내면으로 깊숙이 받아들여 각기 다른 스타일로 표현하는 두 작가의 작업을 통해 현대미술에서 변모된 한국화의 모습을 소개한다.

한국적인 정서와 현대적인 감성의 만남, 전통재료와 기법을 토대로 한 현대적인 해석 및 표현기법의 만남 등을 통해 스페인에 한국의 미와 정서를 전달하고자 한다.

이번 전시는 스페인과 많이 닮아 있는 자연을 주제로 하여 한국의 전통삼베, 광목, 모시 등의 천연 패브릭을 이용한다. 김지은 작가의 패브릭 드로잉 작업과 조미영 작가의 자작나무, 한지, 실크 등을 이용한 섬세한 회화작업이 어우러져 한국적인 전통과 현대적인 감각을 보여준다.

두 작가는 단지 전통을 표피적으로 변용하고 소재를 활용하는 것이 아닌 뿌리가 되는 원형적인 것을 간직한 채 그것으로부터 계승, 발전, 변형시키는 작업을 꾸준히 해오고 있다. 두 작가가 도스 프로젝트를 통해 하나의 시각으로, 둘의 시각을 통한 자연에 대한 소통과 표현방법으로 스페인에 현대 한국화와 한국의 문화를 소개하는 교류의 장을 연다.

이번 전시는 스페인 마드리드의 한국문화원(2013. 2.8~2.22)과 말라가의 말라가 국립대학교(2013. 2.15~2.21)에서 열린다.

Dos Project...First Exhibition

The project displays the artists’ feelings towards different cities around the world, Korean traditional culture, and the contemporary visual art of Korea. Just as Korean music is sweeping through the world by way of the hanryu(Korean wave), the Dos Project, created by artists Kim Jieun and Cho Miyoung, will take the art world by storm. Starting in Spain, this project will move around the world and change themes depending on the city in which it is being held.

The Dos in ‘Dos Project’ means ‘two’ in Spanish, with the implication that one and the other meets in harmony. Unlike other groups of artists who follow the same trend, the two artists took the time to internalize the tradition of Korean paintings more profoundly and were able to create each a unique style out of it. Therefore, the public will be able to discover how Korean traditional paintings evolved into contemporary art through this exhibition. The result of their deep studies and pondering about the similarities and the differences between the western and the eastern culture, between emotion and properties (something you can see and something you cannot) are shown in their art pieces through the contrast in use of traditional materials and the modern interpretation and technique. Through these apparent disparities, they are trying to portray the Korean sense of beauty, both traditional and modern, to the people in Spain.

In this exhibition, Kim Jieun uses natural fabric such as Korean traditional cloth, sambea(hemp) and cotton cloth, and Cho Miyoung relies on Korean natural dyes, hanji(Korean traditional paper), and both artist use silk in their artwork to represent the Spanish nature which they believe, to a great extent, resembles Korean nature. These two different yet similar artworks create a unique balance between Korean tradition and contemporary art.

 Anticipated to be a important channel for exchanging and introducing Korean culture and its contemporary arts to Spain, this project shows the two artists’ point of view on the nature and the ways of interpreting it into their works.

This exhibition is held in Korean Culture Center in Madrid, Spain (2013.2.8~2.22) and Malaga University in Malaga, Spain. (2013. 2.15~2. 21)

■ 김지은

김지은은 서울에서 태어나 서울의 홍익대학교 미술대학 동양화과와 홍익대학교 대학원 동양화과를 졸업했다. 서울 및 부산에서 4회의 개인전 및 여러 단체전, 국제전을 통하여 작업을 선보이고 있다. 한국의 전통 문양과 민화의 모티브, 오방색등의 한국적인 감성과 소재를 및 색채등을 차용해 이를 현대적으로 재해석한 작업을 선보인다. 각기 다른 소재와 색상의 전통 패브릭을 믹스 앤 매치하여 형상화하고 스티치를 이용한 작업으로 옛 규방 여인네들의 미적 감성을 현재의 시각으로 끌어다 놓는다. 작가는 현재 부산과학기술대학교 패션연출디자인과(Busan Institute of Science and Technology/ Dept. of Fashion Production design)의 교수로 재직 중이며 패션일러스트레이션과 드로잉을 가르치고 있다.

Kim Jieun was born in Seoul, Korea and graduated from the College of Fine Arts in Hongik University majoring in Oriental Painting and has MFA in Oriental Painting. She has held 4 solo exhibitions and several group exhibitions in Seoul and Busan, Korea. Using Korean traditional patterns, motives from Korean folk paintings and traditional O-Bang-sek (five colors which mean five different directions each. Blue for the East, White for the West, Red for the South, Black for the North, and Brown for the middle) in her works, Kim Jieun interprets the tradition in her own style, which involves mix and match of diverse fabrics, colors and hand stitching. The artist is currently working as a professor in Busan Institute of Science and Technology, Dept. of Fashion Production Design, teaching fashion illustration and drawing.

홍익대학교 동양화과와 동대학원을 졸업한 조미영은 덕원갤러리(1999), 김옥길기념관(2003), 한전프라자갤러리(2005), 게이트갤러리(2008), 갤러리나비(2010), 그림집(2011)등 열두 번의 개인전과 다수의 기획전 그룹전을 가졌다. 작가는 전통 바탕 재료 위에 가는 선묘로 깃羽을 그려 정제 시키는 과정을 갖는다. 그가 말하고자 혹은 표현하고자 하는 것에서의 본질을 끌어내어 가장 간소하게 절제하는 표현들을 선으로 그려나간다. 그의 작업은 미묘한 압력의 차이나 흐름에 의한 공기 사이를 자유롭게 날아가는 '깃털'에서 생명의 본질을 찾고 있다. 깃털, 알과 같이 조미영화 된 소재를 결합시켜 뛰어난 색채감과 공간감 등의 구성으로 평면 위에 의식의 서사 구조를 만들어 낸다. 현재 홍익대학교 미술교육원과 경기대학교에 출강 중이다.

After graduating from Hongik University with both a BFA and MFA in Oriental Painting, Mi Young Cho has held 12 solo exhibitions in Deukwon Gallery(1999), Kimokkil Memorial Center(2003), Hanjun Plaza Gallery(2005), Gate Gallery(2008) ,Gallery NAVEE(2010), Greemzip(2011) and numerous group exhibitions. In her works, the artist takes on the process of refinement with Korean traditional material. She draws out the essence of what she is trying to say or express and brings out the utmost expression of refinement and exquisiteness through lines. The artist searches for the nature of life through painting ‘feathers’ that fly freely between the air, which is created by subtle difference in pressure or flow. Using feathers or eggs, subjects that have become synonymous with Mi Young Cho, and the theme of ‘Arirang’, the most famous Korean traditional song, the artist fuses together such symbolism to make a description of conscious thoughts about life through the construction of outstanding colors and spatial sense.  She is currently teaching at Hongik University Institute of Fine Arts and Design Education, and Kyonggi University.
