독일의 베를린과 라이프치히는 현대회화를 이끌어 나가는 두 도시이다. 특히 베를린의 현대회화가 추상과 기존의 틀을 벗어나는 것에 중점을 두었다면, 라이프치히는 전통회화의 특징인 구상회화를 통하여 독특한 표현방식으로 두 도시의 성격을 확연히 다르게 보여주고 있다. 악셀 크라우제는 네오 라우흐와 팀 아이텔과 같은 라이프치히 학파를 대표하는 유명 작가들 중 한 명으로, 갤러리 LVS에서는 10월 11일부터 10월 24일까지 라이프치히에서 활동하는 악셀 크라우제의 개인전을 개최한다.

악셀 크라우제가 속한 라이프치히 화파는 전통회화의 이미지 생산 방식을 자신들의 회화에 반영하며, 현 시대에 있어서 회화의 존재성에 대한 깊이 있는 탐구의 결과물이자 그 이미지의 내용에서도 변화하는 사회상을 그들만의 방식으로 담아 표현한다. 라이프치히 화파가 현시대에서 독일의 회화를 구축할 수 있는 버팀목이 될 수 있었던 것도 사회주의적 사실주의를 바탕으로 한 구상회화가 주는 매력으로 분석될 수 있다. 늘 추상이 회화에서 주목을 받아왔지만, 정치적 이슈를 간접적으로 담고 있는 구상회화의 매력이 라이프치히만의 특이한 점이라 할 수 있다.

특히나 악셀 크라우제는 독일 현대미술 속에 한마디로 표현하기 힘든 상황들로부터 내면의 무엇인가를 통해 얻어내는 주제로 작업하는 작가로 잘 알려져 있다. 그의 작품 안에는 마치 자기자신을 다른 인물들과 자신만의 세계를 구축하고 있다. 라이프치히 화파의 아날로그적인 표현방식과 그 안에 정치적, 문화적 요소들을 담아내고 있는 동시에 자신만의 언어와 전통을 작품에 드러낸다. 자신만의 독특한 스타일을 추구하며 두려움과 욕망을 드러내는 동시에 무력함을 보여주는 작품을 만들어낸다.

이로써 악셀 크라우제는 사회적인 특수성을 담은 라이프치히만의 스타일로 재해석하여 독일의 현대미술의 관념적 미술을 구축하는데 이바지하고 있다. 이번 전시를 통해 그의 최신작을 포함하여 총 20여 점을 선보일 예정이다.
