The Heaven of Delight
The Mirror Room of the Royal Palace of Brussels, Belgium
한국에서는 2006년 “눈물의 역사”라는 파격적인 공연으로 더 잘 알려진 벨기에 출신의 작가 얀 파브르 Jan Fabre의 개인전이 갤러리 604에서 열린다.
1958년 벨기에의 앤트워프 Antwerp에서 태어난 그는 ‘파브르 곤충기’로 잘 알려진 장 앙리 파브르 Jean-Henri Fabre의 증손자이다. 할아버지의 연구에 큰 흥미를 느낀 유년시절부터 자연과 인간, 곤충과 과학의 매력에 빠져들었고, 곤충을 해부하여 새로운 생명체로 만드는 일에 흥미를 느꼈다. 더 나아가 그로부터 얻은 성찰은 생명이 태어나고 성장하며, 소멸하는 자연의 순환원리와 인간의 허무함과 덧없음으로 얀 파브르 작품의 핵심적 개념이 되었다. 그는 이러한 주제를 다양한 예술로 표현하며, 공연기획자, 안무가, 디자이너, 작가 등, 자신의 활동영역을 확장시켜 왔다. ‘통섭예술가 Consilience artist’라는 명칭에 걸맞게 자신의 신체와 자연환경, 사회, 동역학 등 다양한 분야를 연구하며 익히고, 여러 이질적이고 다양한 요소를 결합함으로써, 누구도 상상하지 못한 작품을 발표하며 세계 예술계를 놀라게 했으며, 현재 벨기에에서 가장 영향력이고 중요한 현대예술가로 평가받고 있다.
2002년 벨기에의 여왕 파올라 Paola의 의뢰로 벨기에의 왕궁 미러홀의 천장을 비단벌레의 날개로 뒤덮은 대규모의 환상적인 벽화를 제작하였다. 상파울로 비엔날레, 베니스 비엔날레, 카셀 도큐멘타 등 유수의 국제전에 참여하였으며, 2008년 루브르 미술관에서의 개인전으로 또 한 번 주목 받았다.

한국에서 열리는 얀 파브르의 첫 번째 개인전인 「Jan Fabre ; Pride comes before a fall of lash」에서는 비단벌레 날개로 제작된 평면 및 입체작품 14점을 선보인다.
2011년과 2012년 사이에 빛의 방향과 보는 사람의 위치에 따라 다양하게 달라지는 비단벌레 - 딱정벌레의 일종인 비단벌레는 그 문화적, 생태학적 가치와 함께 멸종위기종으로 천연기념물 제496호로 지정되어 채집이 금지되어 있다. 경주 신라고분 황남대총에서는 비단벌레로 장식한 금동 말안장 뒷가리개가 출토된바 있으며, 신라시대 왕실의 장신구로 이용되었다. 작가는 비단벌레가 식용으로 사용되는 태국에서 날개만 수입하여 작품의 재료로 사용한다. - 날개를 이용하여 모자이크 형식으로 제작된 8점의 평면작품들은 [Tribute to Hieronymus Bosch in Congo] 시리즈이다. “콩고의 히에로니무스 보쉬에게 찬사”라는 뜻의 이 시리즈는 수많은 생명이 무참히 학살당했던 벨기에의 식민지, 콩고의 아픔을 배경으로 한다. 벨기에의 왕, 레오폴드 2세가 콩고를 자신의 사유영지로, 후에는 벨기에의 식민지로 만들어, 고무원료생산을 위해 콩고 원주민에게 가혹한 노동과 학대를 일삼은 콩고의 어두운 상처를 화려한 색상의 비단벌레 의 날개로 형상화하였다. 또한 15세기 플랑드르 도상학의 거장인 히에로니무스 보쉬 Hieronymus Bosch의 기괴하고 강렬한 판타지들을 콩코와 벨기에의 역사와 결합시키며 이 시리즈의 작품을 완성시켰다.

이번 전시에는 6점의 입체작품도 함께 전시된다. 박제한 동물을 물고 있는 해골들은 벨기에의 악마 같은 지배자 레오폴드 2세가 연약한 콩고 원주민들의 생명의 위협하며 자신의 배를 채우는 콩고의 역사와 닮아있다.
얀 파브르는 언제나 인간의 삶과 변화, 자연적인 것과 부자연적인 것 양쪽에 대해 이야기 한다. 정신과 육체, 동물과 사람, 삶과 죽음의 결합에 대한 무한한 욕망의 메타포이다.
작가는 이번 전시의 베르니사주 참석을 위해 9월 1일 내한한다. 얀 파브르가 한국을 방문하는 것은 두 번째지만, 작가로서의 방문은 이번이 처음이다. 이번 베르니사주에는 ‘작가와의 만남’도 준비되어 있어, 벨기에 최고의 작가와 그의 작품을 만날 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것이다.
