Artist statement by Wang Yeul
An expression of red color in Korean is subtly different and diverse in the examples of artistic expressions such as red sea and red sky. In my painting, I allow a pair of white birds quietly flying in that red space. These birds, however, look trapped like a still-cut image rather than freely flying over in that space. In East Asian ink painting, a negative space, called ‘yeobaek' in Korean, is considered more importantly than a positive space. It is not a mere empty space but an essential space where actively engages the viewer for imagining their own meanings of painting and also contemplating about a painting. In my painting, the negative space painted in red color is used as an imaginative space in which the viewer feel a vitality of life from red color by making the most beautiful red color for my birds and the viewer. From some point I began to paint a bird and it was a metaphor for me. It further appears as a metaphor for modern people. I have been interested in capturing various feelings and emotions which modern people feel from their ordinary life through the expression of the elongated neck of birds. Some birds with the elongated neck in the empty space seem like singing a song with hope and happiness, but also seem like ourselves who are lonely in a rapidly changing modern society. In this perspective, the bird is a subject matter of my painting as well as a formal element for composition.

The turning point I changed the subject matter of my painting from cityscape to bird happened after I met a friend of mine. I met him in one early summer night in the city of Chungjoo in Korea and we chat over night. I was impressed about his passion on birds and difficulties on his job. After that night, a bird appears in my painting and my painting has been reflected the images from the stories I heard from him like the example of wild geese that lives in group. When wild geese dies in travel, all other family members leave it alone in that spot, but only a partner geese stays around it for the rest of life. I wondered what kinds of messages I could provide the modern people with this sad but beautiful story since it is not obvious that human is not necessarily better than this bird. Images of birds have been expressed in various conditions and situations. For example, some bird’s neck is curved, which appears to be struggling. Some birds are flying with a long straight neck which metaphors a hope. Some birds are freely flying in air with their partners. Some birds that embrace necks look like loving each other. These different expressions symbolize the human beings living in the contemporary life. Their body gestures metaphor human emotions such as happiness, anger, and pleasure. In my painting, diverse forms of bird images are intermediate symbols that bridge human emotions that are eventually related with human conceptions reflected in nature.
In conclusion, bird is expressed in different ways and contains diverse meanings, such as dreaming and a hope. To human beings, flying symbols a freedom and a flying bird metaphors a free sprit to human. We all dream to fly in the sky without stress since there is no geographical boundary in the sky. There is no final destination to birds that always freely flying as they want. I wish that the viewer could receive positive messages for hope by dreaming of birds with the images imprinted in my painting. In a small space in my painting, I left a place for birds who wish to fly. I ultimately wish my painting becomes a little hope to the viewer that struggles in the modern life.
