그 해 겨울
눈발이 흩날리는 날
굽이굽이 산을 오른다.
새하얀 세상이 눈에 들어온다.
하늘 아래 모든 것이 하얗게 바뀌어 가고 있다.
세차게 바람이 분다.
어느새 가늘어진 눈발이 바람결에 흩어진다.
살아가며 내 마음을 괴롭히던
이런저런 상념들도 그 바람을 따라 흩어진다.
하늘의 눈은 대지뿐 아니라
그 대지 위에 두발 딛고 살며
늘 뭔가로 마음을 다쳐온 우리 인간을
이렇게 정화시키는가보다.
눈보라는 그쳤지만 하늘은 먹구름이다.
눈 덮인 산등성이에 작은 나무 한그루가 홀로 서있다.
태생적으로 외로울 터인데도
사철 비바람과 눈보라를 견디며
꿋꿋하게 그 자리를 지켜왔을 나무여.
너에게서 우리 인간들이 지니지 못한
굳은 의지가 묻어난다.
그것은 바로 생존에의 의지이려니...
그 작은 나무 주변의 또 다른 나무들
그들도 하나가 돼어 세찬 바람에 서로를 보듬으며
씩씩하게 살아가는 모습이다.
겨울 추위를 함께 이겨내자고 합창하는 듯하다.
이런저런 일상의 삶에 고단함을 느껴왔던 나는
그런 나무들을 카메라에 담는 사이에
어느덧 힘을 얻는다.
이 추운 겨울이 지나면
저 나무들도 새싹을 틔우고
열매를 맺으며
새로이 거듭 태어날 것이다.
한겨울의 산이 지닌
고요함과 쓸쓸함 속에서도
자연이 우리 인간에게 주는 평화와 나눔
사랑과 용기의 이미지를
하나하나 담아내며 작은 행복을 느낀다.
겨울 산에서 셔터를 누르는 손이 차다.
그렇지만 마음만은 따뜻해진다.
산에서 내려가면
만나는 모든 사람들을 살포시 품어주고 싶다.

Winter of the year
At the day with scattering snow,
I was climbing the mountain
to view the white world.
The whole worlds under the sky were turned into the white.
Strong winds was blowing
while the weaken snow are scattering with wind.
The anguish of my life are disappearing
with every confusing thoughts.
The snow of the sky seems to be refining the earth as well as the human beings living on it being hurt by anguish life of everyday.
Snow stopped, however the sky is cloudy.
ASingle tree is standing on the ridge of the snow covered mountain.
Despite innate loneliness, confronted with snows and storm in four seasons,
Tree should be there with endurance.
I read your strong will that can not find from human beings.
The will must come from the instinct for life
Other trees around the small tree are embracing each others against wind
living their own life.
Taking photo on the trees, I get energy.
After this winter,
the trees will burgeon to make fruit
keeping the new life.
In tranquility and desolation of the mountain,
I am happy with small things as I taken the image of
peace, charity, love, and courage
that nature are providing us.
My fingers are cold shuttering at the winter mountain.
But my hearts are warm.
I like to hug everybody whom I meet when I down from the mountain.

마음의 서랍을 비워야 할 시기

외로운 감정은 삼키고 고독을 뱉다
가만히 눈을 감고 어린 시절의 추억거리를 더듬어 본다. 몇 살 때였는지 정확히 기억나지 않지만 ‘눈’이 올 때면 기분이 좋아서 친구들과 ‘눈’을 맞으며 뛰어다녔었다. ‘눈’은 온 세상을 하얗게 덮어버리면서 따뜻한 온기로 만들곤 했다. 그 따뜻함은 어머니의 품처럼 느껴지기도 했고, ‘눈’을 밟을 때면 들리는 사각거리는 소리도 듣기 좋았다. ‘눈’은 인간으로 이 세상에 태어나서 겪는 다양한 고민거리를 감싸주는 것처럼 보였다.
또 다른 추억으로는 어느 날 텔레비전에서 이만희 감독의 <삼포가는 길, The Way To Sampo, 1975>을 우연히 본적이 있다. 영화의 줄거리는 흰 눈을 배경으로 세 사람의 고향을 찾아가는 여정이 담겨 있으며, 인생의 쓸쓸함을 간접적으로 체험하고 인생은 결국 혼자라는 메시지와 함께 ‘인간의 인연(만남과 헤어짐)’에 대해서 많은 생각을 하게 했다. 그 시절에 이 영화를 보면서 잠깐 무방비 상태에서 갑자기 한숨을 쉬고 어느 순간 가슴이 아릿해 졌던 기억이 떠오른다. 지금 생각하면 인생의 의미를 헤아리기 어려운 어린 시절에 <삼포가는 길>이 기억의 한구석에 도사리는지 알기 어렵지만, 인간의 외로움을 묘사한 탁월한 영상미와 점프 컷의 사용은 어딘지 모르게 남다른 점이 있었다.
오윤경 작가의 나무사진을 보면 영화 <삼포가는 길>에서 아스라하게 눈 오는 풍경을 떠오르게 한다. 작가 노트를 잠시 빌리면 “태생적으로 외로울 터인데도 사철 비바람과 눈보라를 견디며 꿋꿋하게 그 자리를 지켜왔을 나무여. 너에게서 우리 인간들이 지니지 못한 굳은 의지가 묻어난다.” 작가의 말처럼 나무는 시골풍경에서 지나치게 흔한 존재로서 사람들의 이목을 받기 어렵고, 나무는 사람들의 관심에서 비켜 있지만 그러한 시선과는 상관없이 끝없는 생명력을 유지하고 있다. 그나마 시골에 있는 나무는 자연적인 형편이 좋은 편이다.
도시의 나무는 매연과 소음에 시달리고 가지가 잘리는 수모를 당하면서 꿋꿋하게 생명을 유지하고 있다. 작가가 나무를 바라보면서 외로움을 느낀 것은 그녀의 내면이 나무와 동일화된 것이다. 외로움은 나무뿐만 아니라 살아있는 모든 생명에 해당한다. 도시에서 사람들은 낮에 일하면서 수많은 사람들과 어울리지만 홀로 있을 때 외로움을 피하기는 쉽지 않다. 외로움을 없애기 위해서 더 많은 사람과 어울려 보기도 하지만 힘만 들고 얻는 것이 없을 때가 더 많다.

오래전 원시사회에서는 자신의 종족과 떨어져서 혼자 있는 상태는 죽음을 의미했다. 하지만 현대 사회에서는 사정이 달라졌다. 외부 세계와 소통을 단절하고 완벽하게 외로움을 즐기기 위해서는 전화기를 꺼버리고, 이메일을 확인하지 않고, 방문을 잠가버리면 그만이다. 중요한 것은 자신의 내면을 정리하기 위해서는 혼자서 외로움을 철저하게 즐기는 시간이 절대적으로 필요하다. 프로이트(Sigmund Freud)는 일반사람들의 생각과는 달리 평생 화려하게 지낸 것이 아니라 소수의 친구, 동료와 교류를 하면서 토론하고 혼자서 생각하고 책을 읽고, 쓰는데 많은 시간을 할애한 고독한 사람이었다. 고독과 외로움은 미세한 차이가 있다. 고독이 혼자 있는 즐거움이라면 외로움은 혼자 있는 고통에 해당한다. 그런 의미에서 외로움이 없애버려야 할 감정이라면 고독은 추구해야 하는 이상적 정신일 것이다. 정신분석에서 외로움은 타자와 자아의 관계가 아니라 내면의 자아와 현실 속의 자아 사이에서 소통이 결여된 것을 의미한다. 그런 의미에서 오윤경 작가의 사진은 나무를 통해서 인간이 직면한 외로움, 고독에 대한 문제를 시각적으로 환기 시켰다는데 의미가 있다. 한 가지 더 눈여겨볼 것은 흑백사진의 계조에서 사진의 중간 톤을 적절하게 잘 활용한 부분이다. 그것은 때로 주제와 배경의 구분을 와해시키기도 하고, 미니멀하게 구성된 화면에서 적절한 공간적 위치를 점유하고, 대지의 바탕을 지지해주는 역할을 하기도 하면서, 대지의 골격을 보충적으로 설명해주는 고마운 존재인 것이다.
이런 효과는 감성적으로는 흑과 백의 사이에서 극단적인 감성적인 몰입을 자제시키고 관객을 정서적으로 안정시키는 역할을 한다. 그녀의 작업은 극단적인 성향을 자제하고 화합을 지향하는 심리적 풍경을 선보인다. 미루어 짐작해보면 여행을 통해 만나고 바라보았던 자신의 다양한 경험과 상념들을 사진에 충실하게 표현한 것으로 추측된다. 그러한 간접적인 현장감은 카메라의 렌즈 표면에 달라붙어 있는 미세한 ‘눈’의 흔적들, 먼지와 같은 눈에 드러나지 않은 입자를 통해서 복잡한 세상의 실타래에 얽힌 관계를 풀어내듯이 자연의 질서를 유지하며 화면의 깊이를 더 해준다. 작가의 사진에서 외로움이 중요한 이유는 고독을 동반하고 있기에 가볍게 느껴지지 않는다. 인간은 외로움을 고독으로 승화시키는 방법을 길러야 하며, 고독은 인간과 자연의 질서가 통합적으로 맞물리는 자연의 질서이기도 하다. 작가의 사진 적 의미는 자아의 무의식(Es)에 차지한 ‘심미적 무관심’의 영역에서 외로운 감정은 삼키고 고독을 뱉으며 ‘마음의 서랍’을 비워야 할 시기를 알게 된다는 점에 있다.

Time for vacating thoughts

Lonely emotion spits out the Solitude
Closing eye take me back to my childe hood, I was running around with my friends when it snowed. The snow covered the whole world with white and making the mind warm. The warmth was something like mother’s heart and the crispy sounds of snow were so good to listen.
Another my memory was related to the movie ‘the way to Sampo directed by Lee Man Hee(1975). The story was weaved with the itinerary of 3 mans who heading for home. The message of movie was that all human beings are alone living the life of encounters and separations where we supposed to experience the loneliness.
Seeing the movie, I sighed unconsciously and felt my heart hurt. I was too young to understand the meaning of the movies. However I enjoyed jump cuts and beauty of visual arts describing the loneliness of human beings
Ms. Oh’s photo reminds me the landscape with snow of ‘the way of Sampo’. In her artist note, she says “Trees! you are born to be lonely however you keep your position facing with the snow and storm. From you, we find the strong will that we human beings lack with. As she said that the trees are too common to receive the concern of the people. However the trees are keeping its life even without the interests from the people. Still the country side trees are better in terms of natural conditions that urban ones. Urban trees are keeping their life facing with the noisy and pollutions and sometimes with harsh treatments such as branch cut for the landscaping. Artist felt the loneliness because she identified herself with the trees in her mind as the emotion are shared by all living creatures including trees. In the cities the people are still feel lonely when they are alone even communicating with many others at work. To avoid the loneliness they are meeting with more people to get nothing but fatigued body and mind. In primitive period, the human beings separated alone from the tribes were faced with dead. However the modern era the story is different. Some of them enjoy the status of alone by turning off the phone, not checking the email and closing door. Important thing is that modern era they desperately need the time of alone enjoying loneliness to order their mind. Different with the general thought, Sigmund Freud was lonely man who spends his time with exchange the social life discussing with limited friends and comrade, reading and writing books, thinking alone.
There are a little difference between loneliness and solitude. Solitude is pleasure felt alone loneliness is an anguish being alone. In this regards loneliness could be said to be a feeling of negative while the solitude is an ideal mental attitude that we have to pursuit. In psychiatric analysis, the loneliness means a lack of communications between inner ego and the outer ego. In this regards, Ms. Oh’s trees are meaningful in that she noticed on the loneliness and solitude matters which human beings are faced with through visual arts. Another thing to take an eye on is that she utilized the medium tone in the grading of white and black photo.
This skill is effective in lessening the extreme emotional concentration between the white and black and in stabilizing the spectators emotionally. It is presumed that she described the experiences and thoughts obtained during the travel in her photo. This sensible and secondhand spot realism deepens the image keeping the natural order as if solving the relationships in the confused world through the eye; the trace of eyes that adhered on the camera lens like small dust particles
The reason why the loneliness in Ms. Oh’s photo is important is that the solitude is accompanying and that it helps avoiding the light images in her photo. Human beings are finding the way how to enhance the loneliness to the solitude and are realizing that the solitude is the order of the nature between the human beings and environment. The meaning of the her photo is that we are realizing that time for vacating the thought is approaching while swallowing the loneliness emotion and spiting out solitude in the realm of aesthetic apathy occupied in unconsciousness of ego.
