국제 갤러리는 20세기 작가 중 가장 영향력 있고, 비평적 호평을 받는 에바 헤세(1936-1970)의 전시를 2004년에 이어 두 번째로 개최한다. 에바 헤세 연구의 권위자로 알려진 미술사학자 브리오니 퍼(Briony Fer), E. 르완 맥키논(E. Luanne McKinnon)과 에바 헤세 재단 디렉터인 베리 로즌(Barry Rosen)이 기획한 이번 전시는 최근 해외에서 열렸던 헤세 회고전 <Eva Hesse Spectres 1960>, <Eva Hesse : Studio work>* 에서 선보였던 작품들이 소개된다. 이번 국제 갤러리 전시는 에바 헤세의 두 회고전을 압축적으로 경험하고, 근래에 비평적 관심을 받게 된 해당 전시 작품들을 직접 만나는 기회가 될 것이다.

이번 전시에 소개되는 작품들은 크게 두 가지로 분류된다.
우선 1960년 에바 헤세가 예일대학교 졸업 직후 뉴욕으로 건너가 첫 스튜디오에서 제작했던 페인팅 작품이 전시된다. 1960년 당시 작가는 무려 48점의 페인팅을 제작하였고, 이 중 20점이 이번 국제갤러리 전시에 선보인다. 에바 헤세 생전 공개되지 않았던 이 작품들은 추상 형태에서 내적 세계를 반영한 반(半)구상 형태로 변화해가는 과정을 보여주고 있다. 이러한 시기 동안, 에바 헤세는 일기에 다음과 같이 적었다.
“오직 페인팅을 통해 나를 바라볼 수 있고, 그렇기에 나 역시 페인팅을 끝까지 해내야만 한다.
이것은 내 존재 자체와 완벽하게 상호 의존하는 것이다. (1960년 12월 27일)
“Only painting can now see me through and I must see it through. It is totally interdependent with my entire being.” (December 27, 1960)
이 시기 에바 헤세는 신체 이미지와 마치 유령 같은 모호한 형태 사이를 오고 가면서, 표현주의적 성향의 인간 형상에 주력하기 시작한다. 작품의 거친 표면 처리와 스크래치, 드리핑, 채도가 낮은 색채는 윌렘 드 쿠닝(Willem de Kooning)과 알베르토 자코메티(Alberto Giacometti)의 초상화를 연상시키는 동시에 작가 자신의 내면을 보여주고 있다.
이러한 초기 페인팅은 에바 헤세가 형식적, 개념적 발전을 하는 시기의 고심하던 흔적을 드러낸다는 점에서 개인적.역사적으로 중요한 역할을 한다. 즉, 작품들은 작가의 자화상이면서, 작가의 복잡한 심리를 보여주는 전(全)작들의 초기 지표로써 내면적 고통과 작품활동에 대한 열망을 보여준다.
두 번째로 이번 전시에는 한국에 최초로 선보이는 소품들이 소개된다. 에바 헤세는 1960년대 미술계를 주도했던 미니멀리즘 속에서 그것을 개인적인 조형 언어로 소화해낸 독창적인 대형 조각 작품으로 유명하다. 이러한 대형 조각 작품들과 함께, 에바 헤세는 라텍스, 유리 섬유, 조각 금속, 와이어 메시, 면직물, 마스킹 테이프, 왁스 등의 다양한 재료를 사용하여 폭넓은 범위의 실험적인 소품들을 제작하였다.

에바 헤세는 생전에 이 작품들을 판매하거나 친구들에게 선물하곤 하였는데, 작가 사후 이 소품들은 스튜디오에 남겨지게 된다. 큐레이터 브리오니 퍼에 의해 ‘스튜디오 워크 studio works’로 명명된 이 작품들은 이전에는 단지 ‘실험 작품(test-pieces)’ 혹은 대형 작품의 원형으로 여겨지는 등 작품으로서 분류가 쉽지 않았다. 수작업으로 섬세하게 만들어진 이 오브제들은 비결정적 형태를 가지며, 재료의 연약한 물성으로 인해 일시적인 특성을 보여준다. 이러한 일시성은 인간 신체의 나약함을 은유하고 있다. ‘스튜디오 워크 studio works’는 작가의 흔적과 끝없는 실험성을 보여준다는 점에서, 에바 헤세 작품 세계에서 매우 중요한 위치를 차지한다.
이처럼 크게 두 가지로 분류 가능한 작업군을 통해, 이번 국제 갤러리 전시에서는 에바 헤세의 작업 경향을 심도 있게 살펴보고자 하였다. 각 작품들은 ‘물질’과 ‘비물질’, ‘기하학’과 ‘유기학’ 사이의 긴장뿐 아니라 ‘존재’와 ‘부재’, ‘형상’과 ‘정신’ 등 쉽게 정의 내리기 힘든 개념들을 한데 아우르고 있다. 에바 헤세는 “페인팅은 어디에서 끝나며, 드로잉은 어디에서 시작되는가?” 라고 물으며, “나의 조각작품들은 페인팅으로 불릴 수 있다.” 라고 답한다. 즉, 이번에 소개되는 전시 작품들은 작가 자신과 작품 세계에 대한 핵심적인 설명 그 자체라고 할 수 있다.
이번 전시 <Eva Hesse : Spectres and Studio work>는 젊고 능력 있는 작가였던 에바 헤세의 작업을 되돌아보며, 특히 짧지만 다작을 했던 에바 헤세의 예술 인생에서, 실험성을 보여준 특정 순간에 주목하였다. 국제 갤러리와 초빙 큐레이터들은 서로 다르면서도 연결고리를 갖는 두 경향의 작품들을 소개하면서, 현대 조각사에 중요한 영향을 끼친 헤세의 대담한 작업방식을 보여줌으로써 마치 작가의 자화상을 감상하듯, 그녀의 작업에 친밀하게 다가갈 수 있는 기회를 제공하고자 한다.
* <Eva Hesse Spectres 1960> 전시는 해머 미술관(Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, USA), 뉴멕시코대학교 미술관 (University of New Mexico Art Museum, Alberquerque, USA), 브루클린 미술관(Brooklyn Museum, New York, USA) 에서 전시되었다. 전시 제목에 사용된 단어 ‘spectre’는 라틴어 ‘spectrum’에서 비롯된 것으로, ‘유령의 이미지’ 라는 의미를 갖는다.
