국제 갤러리는 세계적으로 명성을 얻고 있는 네덜란드 디자이너 요리스 라만의 개인전을 개최한다. 라만은 본 체어(Bone Chair), 스탈링 테이블(Starlings table)작품과 같이 단아한 선과 도발적인 형태가 만들어내는 강렬하면서도 섬세한 디자인을 선보이는 것으로 알려져 있다. 또한 디자인과 제작과정에서 과감한 시도를 함으로써 새로운 트렌드를 이끌며 호평을 얻고 있다. 라만의 디자인은 혁신성과 전통성을 한데 아우르는데, 이러한 그의 작업은 디테일에 대한 예리한 면모와 장인정신을 고수하는 동시에 끊임없이 새로운 기술을 연구하는 데에 기반을 두고 있다.
국제 갤러리를 통해 국내에 처음으로 소개되는 라만의 작품은 작가의 작업세계를 조망할 수 있는 총 23점의 작품들로 구성된다. 본관 1층 중앙홀에는 그의 대표적인 작품 본 체어(Bone Chair), 본 체이즈(Bone Chaise) 시리즈를 비롯하여 암 체어(Arm Chair), 브랜치 북쉘브(Branch Bookshelf), 브릿지 테이블(Bridge Table) 등 2006년부터 2010년 사이에 제작된 에디션 작품 6점을 선보이고, 2층 전시장에는 2011년에 제작된 잎 테이블(Leaf Table) 1점과 포레스트 테이블(Forest Table) 시리즈 16점이 전시될 예정이다.

요리스 라만은 2008년 네덜란드 에인트호번 아카데미를 졸업한 직후, 뉴욕현대미술관(MoMA) 에서 열린 ‘디자인과 유연한 정신 Design and the Elastic Mind’ 전을 통해 본 체어 (Bone Chair)와 본 체이즈(Bone Chaise)를 선보였다. 전시된 의자 작품은 젊은 작가로서는 매우 이례적으로 뉴욕현대미술관에 영구 소장되는 영예를 안았다. 요리스 라만이 획기적인 디자이너로 성장한 배경에는 그의 폭넓은 관심사와 더불어 개념이나 디자인 형식에 얽매이지 않으려는 작가의 확고한 의지가 자리하고 있다. 그의 작업은 최첨단으로 진행되는 연구과정과 3차원 모델링 기술을 비롯하여, 괄목할 만한 성공을 거둔 하이브리드 접근 방식으로 창조된 생명과학을 결합하여 이루어진다. 이 같은 섬세한 작업의 결과물은 전시작품 본 체어(Bone Chair)에서도 확인해 볼 수 있다. 라만은 자연적인 성장을 거듭하는 뼈, 나무 등의 비율을 모델로 하여, 컴퓨터 디자인으로 적용시키고 새로운 알고리즘을 생성하는 작업방식을 취하고 있다. 이러한 알고리즘은 원래 독일의 자동차 산업에서 이용하였던 것인데, 재료의 할당을 최적화하고 일련의 과정을 최소화하여 무게감과 안정성 얻음으로써 단순하면서 강렬한 디자인으로 실현시킨 것이다.

요리스 라만의 대표적인 작품 본 체어(Bone Chair)와 본 체이즈(Bone Chaise) 시리즈를 성공으로 이끈 요인은 작품에서 느껴지는 단아한 선적 요소와 강하고 도발적인 형태가 한데 어우러지는 데에 있다. 테크놀로지에 대한 그의 관심과 더불어 제작과정의 매우 복합적인 방식을 거쳐 라만의 의자 작품은 완성된다. 그의 아이디어는 이후 유기체의 본질과 조화의 중요성을 재인식하는 방향으로 전개되었다. 디지털 프로세스와 전통성에 대한 영감을 총체적으로 아우르는 그의 작업에 대해 뉴욕현대미술관 디자인 건축분야 수석 큐레이터인 파올라 안토넬리(Paola Antonelli)는 “라만은 혁신적인 역량과 아르누보로 회기되는 ‘유기적 전통’을 반영한 획기적인 디자이너다.” 라고 언급하기에 이른다.

요리스 라만의 스튜디오는 그의 지적 호기심을 불러일으키는 실험실로써, 작업을 대하는 작가의 섬세한 면모를 읽을 수 있다. 월 스트리트 저널은 라만의 이러한 작업세계를 높이 평가하여 2011년부터 창립된 ‘올해의 혁신가 상’을 수여하기도 하였다. 월 스트리트 저널은 그의 수상을 발표하면서 “라만의 작업은 비가시적인 과학의 논리와 디자인적 장식성을 고르게 융화한” 작품이라고 말하며, 그는 “과감하고 새로운 미학을 로봇과 3D-프린터로 적절하게 접목시킨” 작가라고 밝힌 바 있다. 또한 라만을 창의적으로 문제를 풀어내고 미학적 혁신을 이룬 중요한 인물이라고 평가했다.
