1999년 제48회 베니스 비엔날레의 화제는 단연 루마니아 파빌리온의 댄 퍼잡스키였다. 전시장 벽면이 아닌 전시장 바닥에 일련의 작은 타일에 댄 퍼잡스키는 그만의 독특한 드로잉으로 가득 채웠다. 그리고 그는 곧 세계적인 작가가 되었다. 그의 천재적인 재능과 사회주의 리얼리즘 미술을 제대로 훈련 받았던 만큼, 그의 선은 간단하지만 힘이 있다. 뿐만 아니라 아이들의 그림처럼 단순한 드로잉에는 세상을 바라보는 그의 예리한 시선을 잘 드러내 보여준다. 하지만 단순하고 간단한 몇 개의 선은 그가 세상을 이해하는 방식을 잘 보여준다. 때문에 그의 드로잉은 일종의 일기이고, 기록이다. 물론 사실적인 기록이 아니라 지극히 주관적인 작가의 생각과 의견이 반영되어 있다. 그리고 덧붙여 유머까지. 이러한 이유로 댄 퍼잡스키의 드로잉에 매료되면 쉽게 거기에서 빠져나올 수가 없다.

이번 서울 전시는 댄 퍼잡스키의 첫 번째 한국에서의 개인전인 만큼 의미가 크다. 그의 전시가 늘 그렇듯, 이번에도 작가는 현장에서 직접 그림을 그려간다. 마치 재즈 음악을 연주하듯, 공간에서 영감을 얻어 작업을 진행할 예정이다. 그리고 작업이 진행되는 과정 전체도 관객들에게 공개될 예정이다. 운이 좋다면, 전시 준비기간에 미술관을 찾은 관객들은 작가를 직접 만나 이야기를 나눌 수도 있고, 미술관 곳곳에 드로잉을 하는 작업의 현장을 목격할 수도 있다.
미술시장이 권력화되고 있는 지금의 상황을 보자면, 예술/가의 사회적 역할과 책임에 대한 물음은 구태의연한 것일지도 모르겠다. 전시가 끝나면 사라지는 댄 퍼잡스키의 유쾌하고 발칙한 드로잉을 보고 있자면, 예술/예술가의 사회적 의무와 역할에 대해 다시 한 번 생각하게 된다.

댄 퍼잡스키(Dan Perjovschi)는 1961년 루마니아 시비우에서 출생했으며, 현재 루마니아의 부카레스크에서 살고 있다. 10세 무렵 뛰어난 재능으로 발탁되어 사회주의 리얼리즘 작가로 훈련 받았으며, University of Art George Enescu에서 회화를 공부했다. 1989년 루마니아 혁명으로 독재자 챠우체크코의 죽음 이후, 댄 퍼잡스키와 그의 부인인 리아는 루마니아의 현대미술을 알리기 위해 노력해왔다. 1991년 부카레스크의 유명한 반정부 신문인 ‘22’에 정치적인 일러스트레이션을 기고하면서 아트 디렉터로 일하기도 했다. 2007년 뉴욕 MoMA에서의 개인전을 비롯하여, 현재 세계적인 미술관에서 전시를 열고 있다. 댄 퍼잡스키 작업은 편안하고 즐겁게 볼 수 있는 일러스트레이션, 드로잉처럼 보이지만, EU를 비롯한 유럽의 다양한 정세 및 경제적 상황들을 예리하게 포착해 낸다. 다양한 신변잡기적 이야기와 문학, 익살맞은 글귀를 덧붙인 퍼잡스키의 드로잉은 전세계의 관람객들에게 많은 사랑을 받고 있다.
