이번 그룹 전_Independence Day는 갤러리 특별기획 전으로서, 현재 뉴욕과 유럽에서 가장 활발히 전시활동을 하고 있는 작가들과 국내 젊은 작가들을 중심으로 참여 작가 각각 고유의 위트 있고, 에너지 넘치는 특성을, 광복절을 맞아 Independence라는 공통된 언어로 풀어나가고자 한다.

“독립”은 어떤 것에도 예속되거나 의존하지 않고, 독자적으로 존재하는 것이다. 그럼 완전한 독립은 완전히 객체의 상태가 되는 것 인가하는 반문을 해본다. 역사가 보여주듯 인간은 끊임없이 독립된 한 객체로서 인정받기를 원하고, 또 반면에 끊임없이 어딘가에 예속된 정체성을 지니길 원하는 양면을 지녔다. 따라서 완전한 독립에 대해 이야기 하려면 관계에 대한 언급을 피할 수 없는데, 한 차원 떨어져 정의를 내리자면 완전한 독립의 의미는 관계를 잘 매니징 하는 것이라 할 수 있을 것이다.

영혼의 독립, 감정의 독립, 인격의 독립, 모두가 어떤 관계와 관계 사이에서 비롯된 것 들이다. 큰 테두리에서 내려다보면, 모든 예술가들은 작가 개인이 주목하고 있는 특정 관계에 대해 독립이라는 언어로 풀어내고 있다. 이번 전시의 참여작가들은 ‘굳이 저렇게 피곤하게 따져야 하나’ 하는 생각까지 유쾌하게 긁어주는 건전하고 완전한 독립을 선포하고 있다. 건전하다라는 말에 물음표를 달지도 모르겠으나 극단적으로 생각하면 부정적인 반항이나 객기 정도로 치부해 버릴 수 도 있을 것이다. 그러나 작가들은 솔직하고, 정직하게 떠밀리듯 쓸려갈 수 있는 관계들의 속성을 이번 전시를 통해 다시 상기시켜 주고 있다.
이번 815 “Independence Day”전시는 예술가들이 꿈꾸는 완전한 독립을 외치는 자리이다.

The exhibition will bring together eight international artists from New York, Europe, and Seoul, Korea. To celebrate our Independence Day on August 15, the cohesive theme of the exhibition is being independent, and each artist shows the meaning of independence with their own perspective and experience.

Being independent does not belong to anything; it exists on its own. What is the meaning of full independence? Is it a state of being individual? Historically, human beings have struggled with a dichotomy. They need to be independent from others with respect to society and other countries. At the same time they are related to others, as man is a social animal. They are unable to live without the relationship with others. Independence must refer to relationships. The meaning of independence is communicated to others as having a self-identity in social relationships. Independence of spirit, emotion, and personality is based on your relations.

The artists in this show tap into their aesthetic vision to explore the meaning of being independent from the particular relationship that they focused on. The work exhibited, shows the declaration of full independence with humorous wit, striking vision, and realistic expression in various medium. Some works are rebellious and brim with bravado. But the show reminds us of the intermingled relationship and being fully independent through each artist’s clear and honest gesture. They also shout out their dream of Independence Day.
