이번 전시는 STELLA JO의 세 번째 개인전으로 묘원경(猫源境)이라는 이상향을 보여주는 전시이다.
STELLA JO의 작업은 크게 세시기로 구분 지어 볼 수 있다. 1990년대에는 근원적인 것에 대한 탐구를 추상작업으로 보여 주었으며, 2000년대에 들어서는 사진작업을 한지작업과 병합하여 시도하였으며 일상의 단편들이 보여주는 시간의 편린을 조합하여 인생의 의미를 반추하게 하는 작업을 하였다. 최근에는 인간에 의하여 버림받은 애완동물들이 쉴 수 있는 이상향을 표현하여 쉽게 변하는 인간의 마음처럼 사회에서 벌어지는 여러 형태의 폭력에 대한 거부를 내포하고 있다.

이번 전시 「묘원경(猫源境)」을 통하여 STELLA JO가 꿈꾸는 이상향의 세계는 인간에 의하여 버림 받은 영혼을 달래 주는 곳으로 그들만의 편안한 쉼터이다. 도잠(陶潛:자는 淵明)의 도화원기(桃花源記)에 나오는 도원경(桃源境)에서 제목을 빌려왔으며 버려진 길 고양이가 roadkill되어 길 위에서 소멸되어 가는 과정을 보고 안타까운 마음에 시작한 드로잉에서 출발한 작업으로 생명에 대한 경외 심과 그들을 위한 영혼의 쉼터라 할 수 있다. 화면의 여기저기에서 보이는 고양이는 의인화하여 표현되어 있다. 무표정 하게 응시를 하거나 누구를 기다리고 있다. 어떤 고양이는 눈을 감고 쉬면서 현실에서 벗어나 잠시 그들만의 꿈속으로 들어간다. 작가는 이번 전시를 통하여 의인화 된 고양이에서 인간들의 모습을 보여 주며, 소외나 고통 없는 낙원을 꿈꾸고 있다.

“Myo-Won-Gyoung” by Stella Jo
Able Fine Art NY Gallery, Seoul is pleased to present the paintings by Stella Jo in her third solo Exhibition, “Myo-Won-Gyoung” a utopia for cats.
The work of Stella Jo can be seen as three different periods: at the early stage of her work in 1990’s, her pure abstract paintings focused on the quest for the fundamental nature through pure form and color. In 2000s, using the combination of photographic work and traditional Korean paper, she expressed the fragments of everyday life and reflected the meaning of life and mortality. In her recent work, Stella-Jo depicts a restful utopia for the animals and pets abandoned by people. Her allegorical paintings imply a rejection of violence and cruelty in our society.
The series of her work, “Myo-Won-Gyoung” has been described as an ideal world and a comfortable shelter for the wounded soul. The title of “Myo-Won-Gyoung” originally came from the Chinese tale, “Do-Wha-Won-Gi” by “Do-Jam” Stella-Jo was struck with a passage describing an abandoned cat killed on the road, and she played with Utopian ideas as a method of both confronting and denying ideas of mortality. This becomes a main theme of her work as she creates an ideal shelter for the irritated soul.

Unexpected compositions of bright colors and unusual spatial perspectives infuse the work with a surreal quality that announces its own departure from reality and declares itself as a state of longing. Cats in her work are personified, and they seem to stare stonily as if waiting for someone. Some cats close their eyes and relax, and look like going into their own dream away from reality. In the exhibition, she shows the allegorical self-reflection of human, and seeks a painless paradise through her paintings.
Stella Jo received her B.A. and M.F.A. in Painting at Ewha Women’s University in Seoul, Korea. She has shown her work in solo exhibitions at the Si-Sun Gallery and Kwan-Hoon Gallery in Seoul, Korea. Also she has participated numerous group exhibitions and art fairs all over Korea. She received the Awards of Excellence at the MBC Art competition, Dong-A Art competition, and Kyung-In Museum of Fine Art.
