강원도 삼척의 솔섬을 살린 영국작가로 한국에도 잘 알려져 있는 세계적인 사진작가 마이클 케나 Michael Kenna의 개인전 <Philosopher’s Tree 철학자의 나무> 가 2월 12일 토요일, 삼청동으로 신축 이전한 공근혜갤러리에서 작가 사인 회와 함께 열린다. (T: 02-738-7776)
이번 전시는 작가의1974년 초기 작품부터 2010년 최근작에 이르기까지 30여 년 간 전 세계를 여행하며 촬영한 풍경사진들 가운데 나무와 관련된 사진만을 모아 구성한 전시로, 중국, 일본, 한국, 그리고 유럽과 미대륙에 걸친 다양한 나라의 독특한 분위기를 미니멀한 시각으로 포착해낸 50여 점의 대표작들을 선보인다.
다양한 풍경들을 통해 사람과 주변 환경이 어떻게 영향을 주고 받는지를 고민해 온 마이클 케나의 작품 속에서 나무란 그 어떤 소재보다도 특별하다. 고요하게 어둠이 내려앉은 산과 바다 그리고 도시 속에서 10 시간이 넘는 장 노출로 카메라와 함께 조용히 풍경들을 응시하고 있는 작가의 모습은 때로는 홀로, 때로는 여럿이 함께 숲을 이루며 늠름하게 서 있는 그의 사진 속 나무들과 아주 닮았다.
촬영부터 인화까지 직접 손으로 진행하는 아날로그 사진만을 고집하는 작가는 시대와 맞지 않는 길을 가고 있는 것 같지만, “ 나는 아날로그적인 과정이 주는 한계와 느림을 통해 기다림을 배울 수 있다는 것에 감사하며 이러한 과정은 나에게 예술가로서의 신념과도 같은 것이다 “ 라고 말한다. 나무와 같은 이런 꿋꿋한 작가적 태도는 작년 3월에 타계하신 법정스님의 잠언집 < 살아있는 것은 다 행복 하라 > 의 배경이 된 케나의 명상적인 사진들 속에도 잘 녹아 있다.

또한 2007년 한국을 방문한 작가는 당시 LNG 생산기지가 들어서 사라질 위기에 처해있던 강원도 삼척의 솔섬을 아름답게 기록하여 인간의 개발의지보다 더 중요한 예술적 자산의 가치에 대해 생각해 볼 기회를 우리에게 던져주기도 했다.
이번에 전시되는 50점의 흑백 사진들은 컬러사진이 근접할 수 없는 흑백의 무한하고 아늑한 깊이 감이 동양화의 수묵화에서나 느껴볼 수 있는 감성적이고 서정적인 삶의 여유를 느끼게 하는 작품들이다. 이러한 마이클 케나식의 풍경사진 열풍은 우리 나라를 비롯한 전 세계에 그의 사진을 추종하는 사진작가들이 대거 생겨날 정도였다.
“단순하고 담백하게 살아가는 나무처럼” 살기 원하셨던 법정 스님처럼 마이클 케나의 이번 한국 개인전을 통해 관람객 스스로가 “철학자의 나무”가 되어 따뜻하게 바라 본 세상의 모습을 함께 감상할 수 있는 뜻 깊은 기회가 될 것이다.

1979년부터 현재까지 전세계 화랑과 미술관에서 600회가 넘는 개인전 및 단체전에 참여하였으며 프랑스, 영국, 미국, 상하이 등 약 100여개의 이르는 주요 미술관 에 작품이 영구 소장되어있다.
