국제갤러리는 독일의 젊은 세대를 대표하는 작가인 안젤름 라일(Anselm Reyle)의 전시를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 1950년대와 60년대를 풍미했던 추상회화를 새로운 방식으로 해석해 온 안젤름 라일의 작품을 조망하면서, 작가가 끊임없이 관심을 가져 온 차용과 변용의 문제들에 초점을 맞춘다.
알루미늄 호일, 네온 빛, 아크릴, 콘크리트 등의 재료를 사용하며 작업하는 라일은 다양한 이즘에서 벗어나 작업하는 오늘날의 작가들과는 정 반대로, 모더니즘으로 회귀하면서 이를 재구성하고 재해석한다. 대형 사이즈의 회화와 조각, 부조 그리고 발견된 오브제를 통한 설치 등이 작업의 주를 이루는데, 작가는 이런 작업을 통해서 모더니즘 미술운동들의 정신을 전적으로 계승하면서 추상표현주의, 색면회화, 옵아트 등의 20세기 미술사의 개념과 스타일을 부활시킨다. 동시에 이를 아이키아 (IKEA) 장식이나, 그래픽 디자인 등의 동시대 스타일로 변모시키기도 한다. 이것은 차용의 방법을 통해 변화하는 기술문명과 우리의 삶 속에서 작가 자신만의 진정성을 획득하는 과정이기도 하다. 국제 갤러리가 국내 최초로 개최하는 이번 전시에서는 1점의 조각 작품과 1점의 네온설치작품 그리고 9점의 부조 회화작품이 선보일 예정이다.

안젤름 라일의 작업을 설명함에 있어 빠지지 않고 등장하는 어구는 모더니즘으로의 회귀이다. 그러나 과거로 돌아가는 그의 작업방향은 ‘회귀’의 모습이라기 보다는 오히려 더 많은 가능성을 열어 보이는 ‘전진’의 태도라 볼 수 있다. 작가는 여러 20세기 미술사의 개념과 장르, 스타일들을 부활 시키면서 예술운동들의 핵심정신을 작품 전체에 전적으로 받아들이는 것에서 그치는 것이 아니라 디자인 등의 상품의 형태로 변화, 발전시키기 때문이다.
그는 자신을 둘러싼 주변환경에서 끊임없이 자극 받으며 이를 작업에 반영하는데, 이때 그의 작업에 영향이 되는 환경은 전후 독일의 사회주의 건축물에서부터 자본주의의 표상인 벼룩시장까지 다양하다. 라일은 환경적 모티브를 가져와 때로는 이를 확대시키기도, 때로는 정반대의 새로운 모습으로 변모시키기도 하면서 20세기의 엄청난 사회, 정치적인 변화의 격동기를 시각화 한다. 이때 라일은 문화의 상품화를 언급하면서 자신만의 고유함을 만들어 내기 위해 차용의 방법을 작업에 끌어들인다. 발견된 오브제라 불리우는 자동차 기어, 일상의 사물들이 작업의 재료가 되는데, 작가는 재기 발랄하게 변모된 오브제 들을 통해서 우리가 살고 있는 오늘날의 세계를 비판 없이 끌어들이면서 이를 거울처럼 반영한다. 그리고, 오늘날 모더니즘의 역할이 무엇인지에 대한 질문을 던지고 있다.
