“기는 우주에 충만 되어있다. 천지를 꽉 채우고 물체에 푹 젖어 있어 모이고 흩어지는 것이나 모이지도 않고 흩어지지도 않은, 어느 것이나 기 아닌 것이 없다. 이러한 기는 광대하여 영원히 존재한다.”기의 보편성을 나타낸 말이다. 강선흥은 제3의 기운이라는 주제를 가지고 줄곧 기를 탐구해온 작가다. 제3의 기운은 보이지 않고 잡히지 않은 즉 사물에 내제하여 느끼는 힘을 말한다. 때문에 그의 작업은 부피, 질량, 형상의 문제를 기의 운행과 방향 그리고 응집과 풀림으로 해석하였다. 유기적인 생명체의 모습과 닮아 있으며 기운을 생명의 순행으로 보았던 것이다.

강선흥의 이번 작업은 기운을 빛과 선으로 평면화하는데 그 특징이 있다. 기를 얘기하는데 있어서 빛은 절대적인 것으로 아직도 많은 과학자들이 탐구하는, 그럼에도 불구하고 가정에서 가정의 연속을 지향하는 빛이란 그 미지의 세계를 선과 입자라는 이중성의 구조에서 선이라는 파장을 작업에 차용하고 있다. 이는 아마도 질량과 괴체라는 압박감을 벗어버리기 위한 작업과정의 휴식을 의미하기도 한다. 하지만 이러한 평면의 휴식이 어쩌면 더 큰 기운의 깊이로 빠져든다는 점이다.

 선은 입자와 형상을 함께 포함하는 동양의 형상적 사의를 관통하는 미의 핵심적인 요소이다. 선으로 기를 해석하려는 방향 자체가 외적 볼륨의 3차원적 시각을 내면으로 끌어들임으로써 허상화한다. 이는 작가자신이 작업하는 과정에서 생각이라는 사유의 한 가닥을 벗어내는데 그 의미가 있으며, 작가의 길에서 체험하는 매우 중요한 문제를 던져놓았다는 점이다. 따라서 강선흥의 기운은 우주에 충만 된 영원한 존재임을 빛이라는 입자와 파장을 곁들여 드로잉하고 있다고 해도 무방할 것이다. 이점에서 작가는 그 동안의 입체 혹은 조각이라는 조형의 틀을 설치와 평면으로까지 확장하였고, 예술의 방향과 폭을 넓히는 계기가 되었으리라 여겨진다. 빛이 가진 여러 특성 중 두 가지 비춰진 것에 불과한 입자와 파동은 기운의 근원을 이루는 궁극의 존재를 향한 만다라이며, 무극이고, 십자가이며, 바로 인간인 나를 인식한 영원성이면서 동시에 에너지 덩어리임을 나타낸다.

The circulation of life

“Energy fills the universe. It fills the heavens and earth to the full, and soaks deeply into things. Whether it is gathering or scattering, everything is energy. Energy is vast and eternal.” This suggests the universality of energy. Kang Seon-heung is an artist who has explored energy continuously on the theme of the third energy. The third energy is invisible and intangible, that is, it is a felt force immanent in things. Therefore, his works understand the matters of volume, mass and form as the movement and direction and the gathering and scattering of energy. They look like organic living beings as he views energy as circulation of life.

Kang Sun-heung’s works at this time are characterized by the leveling of energy into light and line. Light is absolute in talking about energy and is explored by many scientists. Nevertheless, light pursuing the continuity of family at home borrows the wave of line in the dual structure of light and particle in the unknown world. This may also mean a rest from working for casting off the pressure of mass and lump.

 Line, which contains particle and shape together, is a key element of beauty that penetrates through Oriental figurative ideas. The direction to interpret line as energy virtualizes the three-dimensional view of external volume by dragging it into inside. This is meaningful in that the artist peels off a layer of thought from his working process, and it casts very critical issues experienced on the artist’s way. Accordingly, we can say that Kang Sun-heung’s energy is drawn as an eternal being full of the universe together with the particle and wave of light. In this sense, the artist is considered to have expanded the formative frame of solid or sculpture to installation and plane and to broaden the directions and width of arts. Particle and wave, which reflect merely two of many properties of light, are Mandala, infiniteness and cross toward the ultimate being forming the origin of energy and, at the same time, indicate eternity perceiving the self as a human being and a lump of energy.
