이번 6월 DIE GALERIE Seoul에서는 세계적으로 알려진 여류작가 Sandra Brandeis Crawford의 개인전을 기획했다. 전시는 2010년 6월 24일부터 7월 25일까지 계속될 예정이며, 회화작품 총 25점이 전시될 예정이다.

산드라 크로포드는 1955년 런던에서 태어나 호주 시드니에서 자랐다. 1982년에 런던 왕립대학에서 석사 과정을 수료 하였다. 그 후 오스트리아의 빈에 정착하였지만 2000년에 이르러 왕립대학에 초청 교수로 발탁되어 런던으로 돌아오게 되었다. 현재 그녀는 빈에 거주 하고 있지만 세계적으로 많은 지역을 여행한다. 그녀는 세계 각지를 여행하면서 다른 문화와 언어를 경험하고 이를 그녀의 회화에 반영한다.
그녀는 자신의 의식 속에 각인되어 있는 인상 깊은 장면들을 예리한 컬러 감각을 기반으로 선과 면으로 구성하여 화폭에 채워 넣는다. 그녀는 주로 주제들을 연결하여 작업하는 것을 즐기는데, 한편으로는 그녀가 경험한 세계와 현실의 세계가 서로 연결되어 전혀 다른 새로운 세상으로 나타나기도 한다.

작가는 우리들에게 ‘응시(gaze)’의 순간들을 상기시키고 그것에 대해 생각할 기회를 제공한다. 그녀의 작업은 우리가 일반적으로 느끼는 금기, 부정, 공포, 무시, 경멸의 시선과 직접적이고, 개방적이고, 집중적이고, 돌발적인 응시 그리고 애석하고 불가능한 것에 대한 눈길 등의 경험세계를 포괄적으로 드러나고 있다. 그녀의 작품은 전반적으로 관람자가 다가가기 쉽다. 한편으로는 그녀의 작업이 꿈의 상징물로 채워져 있기도 하지만 결코 신비스럽거나 아리송하지는 않다. 그녀가 꿈이나 상상의 장면을 그리더라도 그것이 너무나 분명히 표현되어 있기 때문에 우리는 그녀의 의도를 쉽게 파악 할 수 있다.

그렇다면 애매한 관점 속의 알 수 없고 멀리 있으며 설명할 수 없고 오묘한 것에 대한 순수한 내레이션이 가지는 의미는 무엇인가? 우리는 작가와 관객의 사이의 구조적인 불균등을 위한 미묘한 암시에서 그 답을 찾을 수 있다. 그녀의 작품 속에 있는 인물들의 응시는 사회적 관계를 나타내기 위해서 작가의 권위를 배제시킨 상태로 관객에게 다가오고 그것들은 서로 상호작용한다. 그녀가 작가로서 완성하고자 하는 것은 인물들에 대한 관찰이 아니며 그 인물들을 직접 응시함으로써 실행되는 탐구이다.

우리가 유대인 작가들의 작품을 볼 때, 그들이 인종적 중재자임을 인식하고 본다면 이해하기 쉽다. 작가는 인간과 자연의 상태 그리고 이들에게 일어나는 복잡하고 놀라운 현상에 대해 고찰한다. 때때로 이러한 그녀의 행보가 교훈적인 시적 표현으로 이어지고, 모순적인 결과를 만들어 낸다.
이번 DIE GALERIE Seoul에서 열리는 그녀의 개인전에서는 그녀의 작품 중 1982년부터 2010년에 이르기까지 그녀의 작가로서의 행보를 보여주는 다양한 회화작품들을 선보인다.
