Mark Kurdziel’s opulent figurative landscapes spring,if not from memory per se, from the idea or sensation of landscape as it filters through in the process of working. He describes himself as non-dogmatic in terms of subject metter; particular traditions are less important than the re-interpretation and re-invention of traditional sources. Kurdziel’s elaborate surfacesfloat bits of gemlike abatraction to the front plane of his canvases, challenging the viewer with the push and pull of recession and flat design, a richness that gives his work a physical tension. There is much improvisation in the artist’s methods. As he puts it,”I like finding the image and seeing where it goes.”This process of indirection, of Klimt’s glittering mosaic-like floating lozenges, and the Fauvist predilection for splotches of raw color can be detected in Kurdziel’spulsing surfaces. The artist enjoys building up his surfaces with rabbit skin glue and powdered pigment, making for a rough quality, which furthers the contradiction between flat abstract areas of color and more descriptive recessioan passaages.

Animals in Landscape, possibly inspired by recurring dreams or memories of trout fishing days, displays Kurdziel’s carefully orchestrated arena, wher the interplay of flat shapes offset deeper space, where a reiver runs blue, schematic trees sway, and a horse grazes. These are only cursory clues to subject, especially for an artist who feels that the real power of a painting is communicated in the non-specific. He talks of navigating his work to in-between states-of-mind, where movies, computers, and the dross of everyday visual overload do not compete. His goal: a spiritual projection of inner states. “What you feel is what you get.” Above all, Kurdziel believes in the pleasure of looking, that art must inveigle as well as probe.
